Professional Profile

Dr. Simmons joined the College of Education and Social Sciences in 2017. She received a B.A. in Family Studies from Lubbock Christian University in 2006, an M.A. in Special Education from Lubbock Christian University in 2009 and an Ed.D. in Special Education from Texas Tech University in 2017.

Teaching and Related Service

Dr. Simmons teaches educator teacher preparation and Educational Diagnostician courses including Educational Psychology of Children with Special Needs, Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities, Classroom Assessment of Individuals with Disabilities, Mental Testing I and Mental Testing II.

Dr. Simmons has made various presentations on research interests that include behavior management, positive behavior intervention supports, applied behavior analysis and behavior management of individuals with intellectual disabilities. She has presented at regional and state conferences on these topics.

Dr. Simmons is a member of the Texas Educational Diagnosticians Association and the Council for Exceptional Children.

Research and Creative Activity

Dr. Simmons’ research interests include function-based, positive behavior supports of students with disabilities, assessment and intervention planning for students with intellectual disabilities, and executive function and behavior in a special education setting. She is also interested in gender and rural culture on student behavior in a public-school setting.

Personal Sketch

Dr. Simmons lives in Lubbock with her husband, Daniel, their two sons, Thane and Larkin, and their family pets, Lady, Buster and a half-dozen chickens.  She enjoys spending time with family and friends, outdoor sports, cooking and traveling the nation in their family RV.
