The Mexico Education Collaborative
The Texas A&M University System Colleges of Education and Terry B. Rogers College of Education and Social Sciences
Invite You to Participate!
Since 2017, the Colleges of Education of The Texas A&M University System have delivered a faculty-directed study abroad initiative in central Mexico. WTAMU has provided the leadership for this initiative since its inception. The Mexico Education Collaborative provides high-impact learning experiences designed to increase clinical and service leadership opportunities for future educators and related professionals in a culturally, economically, and linguistically diverse rural community situated near San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico.
WHERE: San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

The Collaborative is delivered in conjunction with the Hacienda Santa Clara Research and Study Center (HSC). The HSC provides outstanding accommodations, excellent dining, classroom space, and state-of-the-art technology in an art and culture-rich garden campus.
WHEN: Depart USA on Friday, June 9, 2023
Return to USA on Sunday, June 18, 2023
WHO: Undergraduate and Graduate Student Majors in the Rogers College of Education and Social Sciences. College faculty members will direct and participate in all activities.
Students must have a Passport valid to travel to Mexico and return to the USA.
Participating students must be enrolled at WTAMU in one or more courses during the Spring 2023 or Summer I 2023 semesters. The content or learning outcomes of the course(s) in which the student is enrolled must be relevant to the study abroad opportunity.
Students who are not education majors are invited to participate and will benefit from the experience. All participants will deliver enrichment activities in the rural school and participate in the cultural immersion experiences. For students majoring in other disciplines (for example, social work, criminal justice, or psychology), additional opportunities will be provided for discipline-specific learning.
A GPA of 2.75 is required to participate. Prospective student participants will complete an interview with faculty program leaders. The purpose of the interview is to evaluate a prospective participant’s maturity, judgment, self-discipline, and flexibility and any factors that would limit the student’s ability to participate fully in the experience.
WHAT: Participating faculty and students design and deliver academic enrichment experiences for the primary school children with an overarching emphasis in literacy, English language learning, social emotional development, and wellness. In addition, students and faculty members participate in cultural immersion experiences designed to increase their knowledge of Mexican culture (art, history, language, architecture, food, music, etc.) and increase their cross-cultural fluency.
COST: Scholarship funding will be provided to pay for the majority of direct costs associated with this study abroad opportunity. Each participating student will be required to pay $400 in addition to scholarship funding. Participants seeking scholarship funding must apply before March 1, 2023 at https://www.wtamu.edu/academics/study-abroad/information-for-students/study-abroad-funding.html. [The cost of the opportunity for students who do not seek scholarship funding is $1,600.]
In addition, participating students are responsible for arranging and paying for their international air travel to and from Queretaro, Mexico (Airport Code QRO). Students who wish to travel on the same flights as a WTAMU faculty member will be provided the faculty members flight itinerary.
What is included:
Nine Nights Lodging at the HSC;
All ground transportation;
Breakfast, lunch and dinner on most days; and
Cost of cultural immersion experiences including guides, admission fees, etc.
