Professional Profile

Dr. Yang joined the College of Education and Social Sciences as Assistant Professor of Education and Core Doctoral Research Faculty in 2021. He received his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis with a minor in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2021. He received an M.A in Educational Administration from Seoul National University in 2015 and a B.A in Elementary Education from Daegu National University of Education in 2009, both in South Korea.

Prior to the academia, Dr. Yang taught second, fifth, and sixth-grade students in a public elementary school, Korea. He also worked as a data analyst and teacher selection committee in Gyounggi Provincial Office of Education, Korea. He served as an ROTC officer from 2009 to 2011, Korea.

Teaching and Related Service

Dr. Yang teaches doctoral research methods courses, including Quantitative and Qualitative Methods, Data Analysis, and Mixed Methods at WT. He also taught Research Methods and Procedures in Educational Administration, Intro and Applied Statistics for School Leaders, Data Management in STATA, and School Finance at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Research and Creative Activity 

Under the umbrella of K-12 education policy and leadership, Dr. Yang’s research interests include educator labor markets, school reforms, and teachers’ unions, with a special focus on marginalized populations and communities. To generate insight and understanding into challenges faced by students, teachers, and school leaders, he employs advanced quantitative methods, including quasi-experimental designs and machine learning techniques, into various types of large-scale data. His research has been published in a variety of peer-reviewed journals, including AERA Open, Teaching and Teacher Education, Comparative Education Review, and Journal of Education Human Resources.
