Dear campus community:
Recently the International Student Services office, the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, Study Abroad and the Student Enrollment, Engagement and Success division sponsored an event called “Buffs Around the World.”
This event was intended to highlight the various cultures represented by students, faculty and staff who study and work at West Texas A&M University. The event showcased culture, art, attire and cuisine that reflects the diverse population at WT. More importantly, it provided an opportunity for the WT community to learn about various countries and cultures represented at the University. This event created a lively and fun atmosphere in the JBK, and it created a lot of positive feedback from all over campus.
Unfortunately, it was brought to our attention that offensive and derogatory remarks were made via social media during and following this event. These comments were not appropriate and are opposed to the educational mission and vision of West Texas A&M University. We regret if any students were made to feel unwelcome because of these comments. We want every student to know that you are valued as an individual, just as we value the cultures and backgrounds that each student brings to our campus. The offensive comments were made on an anonymous platform and we sincerely hope that they are isolated cases.
While it is difficult to hold anonymous users of an internet social media platform accountable, if any student feels targeted or fearful, we encourage you to reach out to us. We will take action if we are legally able to do so, but we will also provide support to any student appropriate to their desire and needs.
These kinds of incidents give us an opportunity to reflect on our campus culture. Conversations are already underway to find ways to improve upon our ability to make everyone on our campus feel welcomed and part of the Buff community. If you have suggestions, or want to report a specific incident, please contact the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of the Vice President for Student Enrollment, Engagement and Success or the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, and we would be happy to hear you.
Respectfully,
Angela Allen
