Notes/summary of K-16 Education
Committee Meeting in Minneapolis, MN, November 6, 2000
Feel free to comment, enhance, suggest, etc.
What K-16 teachers want is
-
Training
-
information
-
help
Society should target teachers/leaders not students in activities
posted
-
Target audience K-16 teachers
-
Math/science teachers conferences (local, state, national) volunteers should
go to these
-
"Train the trainers" - collaborate with Globe Project?
Societies' Responsibilities (American Society of Agronomy, Crop
Science Society of America, Soil Science Society of America)
-
Not material development or delivery
-
Coordinate and provide standards for material development and/or delivery
-
Provide the "clearinghouse", hardware/software/structure for central information
dissemination
-
Provide list contacts/resource: Speaker/expert/adviser/contact people
-
Society should provide list of people (scientists) by state (speakers bureau)
who are willing to visit K-16 classrooms.
Funding sources (promotional money needed): local institutions
Likely collaborators:
Web Page Concept & Soil Resources
1st page
Each would link to 2nd page, a listing of topics within the
major heading, e.g.,
-
Chemistry
-
Biology
-
Physical Properties
-
Soil Water
-
etc.
These are probable topic areas with multiple linkages. Each topic
link would spawn a new page. Underneath each topic area:
-
Use national or state standards to identify appropriate topics for each
grade level. (Some contributors will have access to teacher education
faculty familiar with these standards, others may not. For those
who do not, the Societies should hire an educational consultant to review
submitted materials.)
-
May need to contact an educational consultant at U.WI to help identify
grade appropriate materials - most collaborators can do this on their local
campuses but if the service isn't available ASA should have a contact available.
Example for subject page
-
Chemistry page
-
Kindergarten
-
Web pages listed (Purdue, WTAMU, VT)
-
Activities available
-
1st grade
-
etc.
People with linked activities (Contributors ) would provide
-
Introduction with basic science information for the teacher
-
Discipline (crops, soils, etc)
-
Sub discipline (chem, bio)
-
Grade level content for sub-disciplines
-
* Society provided service for some contributors- educational consultant
review materials for grade level appropriate
-
Remote or other links
-
Next sub discipline
Things contributors or educational consultant need to provide the target
audience
-
Performance objectives for each activity
-
TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) or national standards - how
does the activity fit into grade level curriculum
-
Outcomes, knowledge, skills, student performance
-
Background information for educators on the science involved
-
Suggested hypothesis
-
How will the activities progress
-
Provide photos, graphics, video clip
-
List of materials/supplies needed
-
Sources
-
Approximate costs (want it cheap and readily available)
-
Activities should be built on scientific method
