Minors, Catalog Requirements 2008-2009

For all bachelor of arts/bachelor of science/bachelor of business administration degrees other than majors in education, a student may request a minor, which consists of 18 semester hours, nine of which are advanced, and three hours completed in residence. Minors with Specific Course Requirements

  • Accounting:
    • ACCT 2301, 2302, 3331, 3332.
    • Select two additional courses from 3300- or 4300-level accounting courses.
  • Civic Leadership (offered through the Department of Communication):
    • Leadership/Team Building:
      Choose two courses from AGRI 3306, SCOM 3345, SOCI/SOCW 4310, MGT 3330, 4336, IDS 3330, 3340, 3396, 3398, SCOM/IDS 3399.
    • Cultural Understanding:Choose one course from ANTH 2351, SCOM 2377, 3370, SOCI 4321, 4322, MGT 4333.
    • Politics in Action:Choose one course from SOCI 1306, HIST 2372, SCOM 3303, POSC 3303, 3307, 3365, BUSI 3312. 
    • Organizational Effectiveness:Choose one course from MGT 3335, MKT 3340, SCOM 3331, 4310, POSC 4350, 4352, 4357.
    • Civic Leadership in Action (Three-Hour Project/Independent Study):To complete the civic leadership minor, students will register in conjunction with a faculty sponsor for an independent study, internship or projects course within their major. Students will complete a “Civic Leadership in Action” course contract with the minor adviser that indicates the appropriate project meets the following:
      • Civic project or research with or for a community partner is related to salient themes in civic leadership.
      • Project leads to a presentation and/or demonstration of civic involvement and leadership with respect to a community problem or need.
      • Project serves as a capstone experience culminating work in the student’s major with civic leadership skills developed in a minor.
  • Computer Information Systems [IDM]:
    • IDM 1315, 2390, 3350.
    • Nine hours of advanced (3000- or 4000-level) IDM electives.
  • Criminal Justice:
    • Select three hours from CRIJ 1301, 1306, 1307 or 1310.
    • Fifteen advanced (3000- or 4000-level) criminal justice electives.

Recommended electives for biotechnology majors planning careers in forensic science:  CRIJ 1301, 1306, 1307 or 1310.

  • Economics:
    • ECON 2301, 2302, 3311, 3312.
    • Select two additional courses from 3300- or 4300-level economics courses.
  • English—General:
    • At least 18 hours in English, excluding courses below 2000.
    • At least nine hours at 3000 and above.
  • English—Language Study Emphasis:
    • At least 18 hours in English, excluding courses below 2000.
    • At least nine hours at or above 3000, to be selected from ENGL 3310, 3311, 3312, 4310, 4311, SPAN 4320 and 4330.
  • English—Literature Emphasis:
    • At least 18 hours in English, excluding courses below 2000 and ENGL 2311.
    • At least nine hours at 3000 and above (must include ENGL 3380); remaining hours in any assortment from 3321, 3323, 3331, 3332, 3341, 3342, 3350, 3351, 3352, 3360, 3361, 3362, 3381, 3392, 3394, 4322, 4332, 4350, 4351, 4352, 4353, 4360, 4361 and 4393.
  • English—Writing Emphasis:
    • Eighteen hours in English, excluding courses below 2311, selected from ENGL 2311, 3301, 3302, 3303, 3304, 3392, 3394, 4301 and 4393.
    • To be counted for the minor in English, emphasis in writing, 3094, 3392, and 4393 hours must be projects in writing.
  • Finance:
    • FIN 3320, 4320, 4326.
    • Select three additional courses from 3300- or 4300-level finance courses.
  • History:
    • At least 18 hours of history, including two of the University U.S. history core options (HIST 1301, 1302 or 2301) and one of the following: HIST 2311, 2370, 2371, 2372, or 2373 and nine hours of advanced courses.
  • International Studies—Europe:
    • Eighteen hours, nine of which must be at the advanced level, three in residence.
    • Demonstrated competency in French, German, Spanish, Portuguese or another European Language, subject to approval by the International Studies Governing Committee.
    • Twelve hours of area-related course work.
    • Students are strongly encouraged to study abroad.
  • International Studies—East Asia
    • Eighteen hours, nine of which must be at the advanced level, three in residence.
    • Demonstrated competency in Japanese or another European language, subject to approval by the International Studies Governing Committee.
    • Twelve hours of area-related course work, six from any field, three of which may come from the “general” list.
    • Students are strongly encouraged to study abroad.
  • International Studies—Latin America
    • Eighteen hours, nine of which must be at the advanced level, three in residence.
    • Demonstrated competency in Spanish, Portuguese or a relevant indigenous language, subject to approval by the International Studies Governing Committee.
    • Twelve hours of area-related course work.
    • Students are strongly encouraged to study abroad.
  • Legal (Pre-Law) Studies:
    • Six hours from CRIJ/POSC 1310, POSC 3305, 4333, CRIJ 4334.
    • Six hours from PHIL 2303, LEGL 1373, 1374, CRIJ 3332.
    • Six hours from ENGL 3310, PSYC 4360, 4355, SOCI 4342, 4302, 4385.
  • Management:
    • MGT 3330, 3335, 4330, 4336.
    • 3332 or 4335.
    • 4311 or 3333.
  • Marketing:
    • MKT 3340, 3342, 4340, 4342.
    • Six semester hours of advanced MKT electives (3000- or 4000-level).
  • Music:
    • MUSI 1208 and 1209 as the visual and performing arts course in the core curriculum.
    • Lower-division courses: MUSI 1374, MUAP (two one-credit hour enrollments), MUSI 1180 (two semesters), MUEN (two one-credit hour enrollments).
    • Upper-division courses: select nine hours from MUSI 3232, 3233, 3234, 3238, 3037, 3135, 3207, 3209, 3380, 4276, 4277 and a maximum of two one-credit hour enrollments in MUAP 30XX (take two more semesters at 10XX level before enrolling in the 30XX level).
    • Students will enroll in MUSI RCTL the semesters of MUAP but will only attend six approved recitals for those semesters.
  • Political Science:

    • Nine hours of advanced (3000- or 4000-level) political science courses.
  • Philosophy:
    • At least 18 hours in philosophy, including PHIL 1301, 2303, 3301 and 3302.
    • Six hours selected from PHIL 2374, 3094, 3392 or 4302.
  • Spanish:
    • At least 18 hours in Spanish, including 2311, 2312, 3315, 4375 and six semester hours of advanced Spanish electives.
  • Sports and Exercise Sciences—Coaching:
    • ATTR 2371, SES 2333-2339 (choose two), 3350-3354 (choose two), 3356.
  • Sports and Exercise Sciences—Exercise Science:
