English Proficiency Requirements

West Texas A&M University accepts Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), The International English Language Testing System (IELTS), and Pearson Test of English (PTE) for proof of English proficiency.

Undergraduate Applicants

Score Requirements:

  • TOEFL 71 iBT
    • WTAMU school code: 6938
  • IELTS score of 6.0 overall band
  • PTE score of 48

Graduate Applicants

Score Requirements:

  • TOEFL 79 iBT
    • WTAMU school code: 6938
  • IELTS score of 6.0 overall band 
  • PTE score of 53
  • Please note that M.S. in Biology and M.S. in Environmental Science have higher English proficiency requirements
    • TOEFL 90-91 iBT
    • IELTS 6.5 overall band
    • PTE 62

Applicants who are citizens of the following countries will be exempt from the English proficiency requirement:

Academic English Pathway Program (ESLI) English as a Second Language International is available on campus for students who do not meet the TOEFL or IELTS requirements.
