After you begin your studies at West Texas A&M University, you might find it necessary to change your major for various reasons. There is both a University process as well as an immigration process involved in changing your major.
University Process
- Obtain a current University catalog and review coursework and degree requirements for the new major you wish to pursue.
- Discuss your intention to change your major with your current academic adviser.
- Contact the department of the new major and find out who the academic adviser is for the new major. Make an appointment with the new adviser.
- Take your transcript to your appointment. Discuss with the new adviser what classes you have already taken and what classes you need to take for your new major.
- Sign an advising agreement with your new adviser. This agreement will be sent to the Registrar’s Office. The Registrar’s Office will change your educational records to reflect the new major.
- Register for classes in your new major.
Immigration Process
- Notify an immigration adviser in the International Office of your intention to change your major.
- Obtain a new updated financial document with proof of finances needed to undertake the new degree program. For information go to Tuition Information.
- Estimate the additional time needed to complete the new program. Does the program end date on your current I-20 give you enough time to complete the new program? If you require an I-20 extension, this needs to be communicated to an immigration adviser in the International Student Office (ISO).
- Make an appointment with an immigration adviser to update your I-20 with the new major and updated financial information.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
- Copy of new advising agreement
- Updated financial information
