Career Checkpoint

Help your student staff identify and develop the marketable skills they are gaining through on-campus employment!

Career Checkpoint is a toolkit used to empower students to claim the marketable skills they are gaining through on-campus employment. There is value in every on-campus position and supervisors have the power to educate their student staff on what marketable skills they are gaining and how those can be transferred to their future careers.

Career Checkpoint has three required Checkpoint Meetings that gear discussions around student and departmental goals, marketable skills, growth and development. By the end of this process, your student staff will be able to articulate their skills in interviews and on their resumes.

What are the Marketable Skills identified in Career Checkpoint?

Career Checkpoint is underpinned by National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) career readiness core competencies. These eight marketable skills were identified by employers as the most important skills for college students to have when they graduate:

  1. Critical Thinking
  2. Oral/Written Communication
  3. Teamwork/Collaboration
  4. Digital Technology
  5. Global/Intercultural Fluency
  6. Leadership
  7. Professionalism/Work Ethic
  8. Career Management
