Appointments

All appointments can be made by coming to the office of Student Counseling Services (SCS) in the Student Success Center, CC 116 or by calling our office at 651.2340.  All appointments are confidential and provided at no charge to currently  enrolled students.  We see students with a wide range of issues from stress, adjustment to college, relationship issues, and career decision-making to more serious concerns such as depression, anxiety, and trauma.  Most students can be helped in fewer than 10 sessions. 

Your Initial Session

Normally, your initial intake session will be scheduled within a few days, depending on our current case load.  (Please note, if you are in need of immediate help, inform our staff so that we can connect you to the appropriate crisis resources immediately.)  When you schedule your initial intake session, you will be asked your name, phone number, and your buffalo gold card number.  Your first session will last about 45 minutes to one hour; however, you will need to arrive 10 minutes early to complete an intake questionnaire on a laptop.  Subsequent sessions and the necessary length for each will be determined by you and your counselor.  Please keep this in mind when you are scheduling your sessions.

It is important that you arrive promptly for your first session in order to allow sufficient time to complete the necessary intake forms.  If you are more than 10 minutes late for your initial intake session (and follow up sessions), you will be asked to reschedule.  The intake forms consist of demographic information, clinical history, client service agreement, as well as essential questions.  These forms are completed on a computer in our office.

The purpose of your initial session is for your intake therapist to obtain information about your current concerns, relevant history, and goals.  During this session,  your therapist should also review relevant SCS policies and procedures including limits of confidentiality.  At the end of your initial appointment, you and your therapist will determine an appropriate course of action.  This plan may include follow-up sessions, referral to another counselor in our center, or referral to another department or outside agency.

About Your Therapist

The therapist you see during your initial visit may or may not be the therapist you see in follow up sessions. In most cases, whether or not you will continue seeing the same therapist will be discussed with you before a transfer is made.

Our staff consists of the Director of SCS who is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Professional Counselor Interns, and support staff.  Our office is also a teaching environment which works closely with the departments of Psychology, Social Work, and Counseling Education.  Therefore the therapist you see may be a master's level practicum or intern student. 

Rescheduling and Canceling Appointments

Should you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please contact us at 651.2340 as soon as you become aware that you will need to miss your appointment.  You can leave a message on the voice mail if you are calling outside of business hours. No-show appointments will count towards the 10 sessions you are allotted each year (Sept 1-Aug31).
