Community Programs The Virgil Henson Activities Center offers two community programs, Camp Tatanka and Splish Splash Academy as well as membership to the activities center for community members. Camp Tatanka  The city of Canyon and West Texas A&M University offer children an exciting summer program. The summer recreation program has evolved into a day camp for children who have completed any grade between kindergarten and grade six. Camp Tatanka’s camp schedule provides parents with a carefully planned and supervised program Monday - Friday, coinciding with WTAMU’s summer class schedule.
Activities Campers should plan to stay until activities are completed to maximize activity coordination and supervision. Parents can enroll their children in any or all of the 10 weekly sessions (Term 1 and/or Term 2). Possible activities include archery, bowling, crafts, sport skills, storytelling, swimming and weekly library and museum visits. All-day and afternoon campers will swim in the Virgil Henson Activities Center swimming pool Mondays through Thursdays. There will also be swimming on selected Fridays throughout the summer. Scheduling of other activities varies. All regularly scheduled activities are in the Virgil Henson Activities Center on the campus of West Texas A&M University. Parents will be notified in advance and their permission will be secured for any field trips or activities away from the activities center. Scheduled activities begin at 8 a.m. Price includes all activities, morning and afternoon snacks, and lunch. Traditional Morning Camp 7:15 a.m.-12 p.m., Monday-Friday Term One: May 31 - July 1 (deadline May 20) - $260/child Term Two: July 5 - August 5 (deadline June 24) - $260/child Weekly: $60/child except for week 1 and week 6; week 1 $48/child, week 6 $48/child There will no longer be a daily rate for Camp Tatanka. West Texas A&M University is excited to announce our learn to swim program. All 30-minute lessons will be in the Virgil Henson Activities Center pool on the campus of West Texas A&M University, Monday - Thursday. There are two sessions to choose from, group lessons and Baby Buffs. Group lessons begin at age three and up. Baby Buffs is available for children ages six months and up. This one-week class requires parent participation and a swim diaper, if necessary. Children and adults interested in learning to swim competitively can call 806-651-2330 for more information.
