About REU

Eight students will be selected to participate in a 10 week summer research experience examining ecological and environmental issues impacting the Southern High Plains.  Students will work with faculty mentors to develop research questions and hypotheses, design experiments, collect data and analyze results, and present their findings at a mini conference during week 10.

Activities will include:

  • Ethics course that also addresses the region’s history, ecology, and environmental issues
  • Field trips to ecologically significant sites (Palo Duro and Caprock Canyons State Parks, Matador Wildlife Management Area, Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge, and Crossbar Ranch)
  • Seminars and brown bag sessions on research methodology, communication skills, graduate schools, and science careers
  • Informal events allowing time for networking
