WTAMU Student Wins First Place in Poster Competition

CANYON, Texas—Liz Capt, a senior biology major at West Texas A&M University, brought home a first-place prize from the 2012 West Texas STEM Undergraduate Research Conference Oct. 5-6 at Midland College.

Capt’s poster, “Introgressive Hybridization of Mule and White-Tailed Deer,” won in the Biological Science Poster Presentation Division. The first-place win earned her a $200 prize.

The STEM Undergraduate Research Conference is a regional showcase of undergraduate research in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students from 13 regional community colleges and universities participated in the event.

Capt has worked with mentor Dr. Rocky Ward, assistant professor of biology, for the past two years, where has gained experience in genetic laboratory research. She will represent WTAMU in November at the 10th annual Texas A&M University System Pathways Symposium. She will graduate in December with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and biology.
