WTAMU’s Cornette Library Receives NEH Grant for Bridging Cultures Bookshelf

CANYON, Texas—Cornette Library at West Texas A&M University is one of 24 libraries in the state of Texas to be awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for the Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys, a project of NEH’s Bridging Cultures special initiative.

The library will host its first Bookshelf event with the viewing of the film Prince Among Slaves at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4 in Old Main, Room 220. The one-hour film is one of three films included in the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf. There will be an introduction to the materials received through the grant, and Dr. Bryan Vizzini, associate professor of history, will facilitate discussion of the film.

The Bridging Cultures Bookshelf is the first in a series of Bridging Culture projects. It includes 25 books and the three films, plus access for one year to Oxford Islamic Studies Online. The materials can be found on the Loan Shelves in Cornette Library and are designed to acquaint the public with Muslim beliefs and practices as well as the cultural heritage of Islamic civilizations. Book titles include Prince Among Slaves by Terry Alford, Dreams of Trespass by Fatima Mernissi, The Ornament of the World by Maria Rosa Menocal, Mohammad: A Very Short Introduction by Jonathan A. C. Brown and In the Country of Men by Hisham Matar. The Bookshelf was developed by NEH and the American Library Association with the advice of scholars, librarians and other public programming experts.

As a recipient of the Bookshelf, Cornette Library will be eligible for upcoming public programming grant opportunities. Support for the development and distribution of the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf was provided by a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York with additional support from the arts and media components from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art.
