WTAMU Preparing for April Relay for Life Event

Kick-Off Party Planned for Feb. 9

CANYON, Texas—Plans are under way for West Texas A&M University’s 2012 Relay for Life with a special kick-off party at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9 at the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church in Canyon.

Relay for Life, a national fund-raising event of the American Cancer Society, is from 7 p.m.-7 a.m. April 20-21 at WTAMU’s Buffalo Sports Park. Participants will walk, jog or run with family, friends and survivors in a fight against cancer. The event celebrates those who have battled cancer and remembers those who have lost the fight against the disease.

Committee members, comprised of WTAMU faculty, staff, student survivors and community members, will be at the kick-off party to answer questions and provide information about participating in the Relay for Life. Food will be served.

WTAMU team captains and team members are needed to participate in the annual event to help raise funds for research, education and services. Campus offices, departments and organizations are urged to team up and help raise $1,000 per team during the 12-hour event. Each organized team must have at least one member participating during the 7 p.m.-7 a.m. relay.

Last year’s WTAMU relay recently received one of the American Cancer Society’s highest honors. The relay was recognized at Relay University in Lubbock with the Heart of Relay Award for increasing the 2011 relay funds raised by 269 percent.

For more information or to register, contact Alyson Cantu, event co-chair, at 806-651-5304, acantu@wtamu.edu or at relayforlife.org/canyontx.
