WTAMU Continuing Ed to Offer Pharmacy Tech Course

CANYON, Texas—The Office of Continuing Education at West Texas A&M University will offer a Pharmacy Technician Training course beginning March 1.

The 14-week course is tailored to fit busy family and work schedules and designed to prepare students with both theoretical and practical training through hands-on experience. The classes will prepare students for entry-level jobs as a pharmacy technician in retail and institutional settings. Those who complete the rigorous course will know how to prepare prescription orders under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and how to perform all duties required in any pharmacy setting. Students also will be prepared to take the certification exam offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).

“With an aging population, our pharmaceutical needs are increasing tremendously,” Roxie Pranglin, interim director of continuing education, said. “This program is designed to meet the needs of pharmacies and provide opportunities for people in our region.”

The classes will meet Monday nights from 6-9 p.m. beginning March 1. Once the 14-week program is completed, students will begin the 120-clock-hour externship in a local pharmacy to gain hands-on experience. Certificates of completion will be distributed after completion of the externship.

Enrollment for the program is limited, and admission is based on application and interview. Cost is $3,950 and includes materials and textbooks. For more information or to register for the course, call the Office of Continuing Education at 806-651-2037.
