University to Honor Donors at President's Honors Scholars Dinner

CANYON, Texas—Individuals and corporations responsible for establishing endowed President’s Honor Scholarships at West Texas A&M University will be honored at a special dinner at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16 at the Alumni Banquet Facility on campus.

Since 1992, the President’s Honor Scholarship (PHS) program has been instrumental in attracting some of the area’s best students to WTAMU, and current PHS recipients also will be guests at the dinner.

The University has two PHS scholarship designations—Presidential Scholarships are endowments of $100,000 and President’s Honor Scholarships are endowments of $40,000. Contributions are given by an individual or group, and the donations can be a one-time gift, or payments may be made over time. The gifts are permanent endowments that are never spent; only the income is used to make scholarship awards. The Thelma and B. Raymond Evans Presidental Equestrian Scholarship is the University’s newest Presidential Scholarship, and the five new President’s Honor Scholarships are the Roberne Wilson Foran PHS in Music, the Eleanor Glazener PHS, the David D. and Nona S. Payne Foundation PHS, the Max Sherman PHS and the Woltz Family PHS.
Students receiving the scholarships must rank in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class, score at least a 25 on the ACT or a 1200 on the SAT and be community leaders. To maintain eligibility, students must keep a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 or higher and carry at least a 15-hour class load each semester.

Donors are allowed to establish additional criteria for a scholarship, such as a preference on geographic area or major. The WTAMU Foundation makes every effort possible to match student recipients with donor preferences.

PHS recipients are listed by hometown, classification, major and benefactor.
