University to Celebrate Holiday Season with Carol of Lights

CANYON, Texas—Thousands of lights will illuminate the West Texas A&M University campus when the annual Carol of Lights kicks off the holiday season at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26.

Students, faculty, staff and community members will gather on the south side of Old Main to celebrate the holiday season with the ceremonial lighting of the campus. Miles of Christmas lights were strung on buildings, trees and shrubs during the Hanging of Lights Nov. 2, and the Carol of Lights marks the final phase of the annual lighting of the campus. The event is hosted by the WTAMU Residence Hall Association.

Dr. Wade Shaffer, interim provost/vice president for academic affairs, will use technology to turn on the lights and illuminate the campus for the first time this season. The WTAMU choirs and the WT Brass Ensemble will be on hand to provide the sounds of Christmas with a selection of holiday music. Those attending will be given lighted candles and invited to sing along.

Members of the U. S. Marine Corps will be there for its annual Toys for Tots Drive. Students, staff, faculty and community members attending are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy (no toy guns, please), and members of the Marine Corps will collect the donations to make Christmas brighter for needy children.

Refreshments will be served in Old Main following the Carol of Lights ceremony.

For more information about the Carol of Lights, call the Residence Hall Association at 806-651-3004.
