University Receives Upward Bound Math and Science Grant
CANYON, Texas—Good news from the Department of Education continued this week when West Texas A&M University received word that its proposal for the Upward Bound Math-Science (UBMS) program has received a $1.25 million grant for the next five years.
This is a first-time grant for WTAMU. It is part of the federal TRIO Programs that provide educational opportunities focused on post-secondary education for first-generation, low-income high school students. The UBMS program works with first-generation, low income high school students who express an interest in the STEM fields—science, technology, engineering and mathematics. WTAMU’s grant will provide $250,000 per year for 60 students from two target high schools—Hereford and Palo Duro High School in Amarillo.
“We have wanted this type of grant for a long time, but we’ve never had the time and energy to put in a good proposal,” Martin Lopez, director, said. “Every year the proposal is due at the same time as our Upward Bound one, but this year the timing worked out, and we are very excited to be able to help those students interested curriculums focused in the STEM areas.”
High school students participating in WTAMU’s Upward Bound Math-Science program will receive tutoring and year-round counseling and advisement. They also will participate in workshops, college tours, cultural events and a five-week summer academic program, where they live on the WTAMU campus and attend math and science classes for a true college experience. Parent workshops also are offered.
UBMS is the third grant WTAMU has received in as many months from the U. S. Department of Education. The University’s McNair Scholars Program received $231,448 for the next five years, and the Upward Bound program received $327,863 for the next five years.
The University is currently hiring additional staff for the UBMS program, and detailed information will be available at a later date.
