University Announces Choice for Vice President for Strategic Relations

CANYON, Texas—West Texas A&M University President Walter V. Wendler has named Dr. Bradley Johnson as the University’s new vice president for strategic relations. Johnson will begin his duties at WTAMU on Oct. 1.Dr. Bradley Johnson

Johnson comes to WTAMU from Mt. Pleasant, where he has served as president of Northeast Texas Community College since 2008.

The vice president for strategic relations is a new position that will oversee the University’s strategic initiatives, set goals, accomplish tasks and evaluate the impact of each initiative. This position also will build relationships with key stakeholders, develop cooperative ventures and help achieve the goals of the University’s strategic plan. The vice president also will focus on transfer and other non-traditional students. He will build relationships with community colleges across the region and create an innovative plan to make WTAMU a premier university for its education of transfer students. The vice president for strategic relations will report to the president.

“Our students are changing. Panhandle and state needs for educated citizens are changing. The nature of a university education is changing. Some Panhandle high school graduates are leaving high school with dual credit associate degrees. All this means WT must change to meet this continually evolving environment,” Wendler said. “Brad will help us shape a campus that welcomes this wide array of students. While responding to these changing circumstances, Brad brings a set of West Texas values that are immutable: hard work, commitment to doing a job well, becoming part of something larger than self and serving the community.”

Johnson is a WTAMU alumnus, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1981 and a M.Ed. in counseling in 1984. He received a M.Ed. in higher education from Texas Tech University in 1999 and an Ed.D. in educational studies from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, in 2004. He began his career at Amarillo College in 1994 as a counselor in the Adult Students Program and as the program’s coordinator from 1995-1999. He served as AC’s director of enrollment management from 1999-2004, as dean of college advancement from 2004-2006 and vice president and dean of development from 2006-2008.

“I am truly fortunate to have the opportunity to join the outstanding WT family as the University seeks to become the preeminent transfer university in Texas,” Johnson said. “I have spent the last 22 years preparing community college students to transfer. Now I will be part of the community that accepts those students and helps them finish their goal of a baccalaureate degree. The opportunity to serve my alma mater at this time is quite an honor for this Canyon boy.”

Johnson and his wife, Vicki, have two sons, eight grandsons and one granddaughter.
