University Alumnus Takes Emmy Award

CANYON, Texas—West Texas A&M University alumnus Jorge Calvo was handed an Emmy June 13 for his work with KINC-TV Univision Las Vegas.

Calvo, who graduated in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication/broadcasting, earned his Emmy in the category of General Assignment News Story from the Pacific Southwest region of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. His award-winning piece was titled “Se Paga Caro” (Price is High), a two-episode news story recorded in the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas.

“We were able to interview some of the inmates in the only jail that Las Vegas has,” Calvo said. “Through their testimonies, we were able to experience the suffering and shame that many of them feel when deprived of their freedom.”

The piece aired during May sweeps, and the Emmy was presented June 13 in San Diego.

“The piece represents a lot of hard work, and I am very honored to receive an Emmy for it,” Calvo said.

The Pacific Southwest region of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is comprised of San Diego, Bakersfield, Palm Springs, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Santa Maria in California and Las Vegas, Nev.

“The General Assignment category is one of the largest and most difficult to win,” Dr. Leigh Browning, associate professor of mass communication and director of broadcasting, said. “Being in Las Vegas means that Jorge competed in a large-market category, and that’s a big deal.”

The Emmy Awards are presented annually as an incentive for continued excellence in television.
