Representatives from West Texas A&M University will first “Paint the Town Maroon” from 9 a.m.-noon. as they deliver maroon and white balloons to Hereford businesses and individuals who support WTAMU. The rest of the day will be spent taking part in activities at the golf course and at Dameron Park. WTAMU athletics will be represented along with the Office of Admissions, Alumni Association and Institutional Advancement to provide information and answer questions about WTAMU. The four-person WT Fore County Golf Scramble begins at 1 p.m. at the city’s municipal golf course. Cost is $60 per person or $240 a team. All proceeds from this year’s golf scramble will benefit the Cal Garrett Memorial Scholarship at WTAMU. Garrett, who passed away in October 2008, served as the golf pro at the John Pitman Municipal Golf Course for more than 15 years. When Garrett first moved to Hereford to take on the pro position, the course covered just nine holes. In 1971, he oversaw the construction of the back nine holes, making it an 18-hole course. A plaque near the putting green and adjacent to the pro shop honors Garrett and his years of service to the golf course. The veteran attended WTAMU after serving with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Twelve years later he finally earned a degree in engineering from Texas Tech University. He was a strong advocate of good sportsmanship and integrity and was impressed with the athletic program at WTAMU. He and his wife Jan were season ticket holders for many WTAMU sports, and the Cal Garrett Memorial Scholarship serves as a lasting honor to Garrett’s legacy and love of sports. The scholarship was established by family and friends and provides financial support for WTAMU golfers. In addition to the golf scramble, WTAMU also will host an afternoon of fun, games and giveaways from 3-6 p.m. at Hereford’s Dameron Park. Various sports stations will be available for children to play and learn with WTAMU student athletes and coaches. The University’s Mobile Go Center, a 42-foot trailer specially equipped to deliver college information, also will be available for tours. The day’s activities will close out with “Dinner at the Course” from 6-9 p.m. A social hour begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Cost is $10 per person and children 12 and under eat for free. To register for the golf scramble/dinner, call Ted White, golf pro, at 806-363-7139. —WTAMU— |
