Homecoming 2009 Offers Variety of Activities

It’s Homecoming week at West Texas A&M University where it’s “Always home, always welcoming, always WT,” and everyone is invited to take part in the fun.

Events kicked of Monday, Oct. 5 and continue through Saturday, Oct. 10 when the WTAMU Buffs meet Eastern New Mexico University at 6 p.m. at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. But there’s plenty to see and do before the big game.

On Thursday there will be a free Homecoming concert featuring Jackopierce at 9 p.m. on the Pedestrian Mall, followed by a midnight weenie roast at the Bonfire site. Things really start to pick up on Friday, Oct. 9. The annual Homecoming Classic Golf Tournament begins with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. at the Ross Rogers Golf Complex. The Athletic Hall of Champions reception and induction ceremony honoring the Class of 2009 begins at 5:30 p.m. at the First United Bank Center, and the Alumni Association will host a Golden Buff Reception at 6 p.m. in the Alumni Banquet Facility. The University’s traditional Pigskin Revue will kick off at 8 p.m. at the Box, followed by the Torch Procession, the Lighting of the Bonfire and the Homecoming dance and free concert featuring SafetySuit at 10 p.m. on the Pedestrian Mall.

And on Saturday the streets of Canyon will be lined with people for Canyon’s Fair on the Square and WTAMU’s annual Homecoming Parade. A 5K Buffalo Stampede starts at 10:45 a.m. at the Randall County Courthouse, and the parade starts at 11 a.m. and travels east down Fourth Avenue. Beginniing at 3 p.m., the Department of Agricultural Sciences will serve up pulled-pork sandwiches at the Kimbrough Memorial Stadium tailgate area. The football game starts at 6 p.m., and the 2009 Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned during halftime festivities.
