Centennial Countdown Ornament Series
The Fieldhouse, affectionately known as “The Box,” has served West Texas A&M University and the community since 1951. During its nearly 60-year history, “The Box” has been used for athletic practices and events, commencements and ceremonies, and performances by well-known entertainers and artists, all the while maintaining its 1950s ambiance. “The Box” hosted Gerald Ford during a 1976 campaign tour, and performers ranging from Willie Nelson to Naomi Judd to Olivia Newton-John have appeared before packed houses. However, its use as an athletic facility has given “The Box” its renowned mystique.
Often feared by opposing teams, Buff and Lady Buff basketball and volleyball teams have met with great success in these friendly confines. At one time, “The Box” was home to an 85-game winning streak by Lady Buff basketball, and it has hosted such NBA greats as Larry Bird and former-Buff Maurice Cheeks. Numerous championship banners have graced the walls of the facility as a testament to the success of these teams.
The establishment holds memories for Buffs from every corner of the world. Today “The Box” is used primarily for athletic practices since the opening of the University’s First United Bank Center in 2002.
