Have You Herd? May 2010 Salute

Niki Brown, Andrew Brown, Johnny Story | May 2010

jenifer kunzIt took hours and hours of travel, shooting and editing, but creating a documentary about West Texas A&M University’s Readership WT trip to Africa has proven to be a winning experience for Niki Brown, Andrew Brown and Johnny Story.

The documentary, “Through the Eyes of Africa,” premiered in November 2009 and since then, the co-directors have racked up some pretty impressive hardware for their work. The award tally includes seven Telly Awards—two silver, four bronze and one bronze People’s Choice—both a national and regional award from the National Broadcasting Society, a third-place award from the Broadcasting Educators Society and a silver ADDY. It’s quite a collection of honors, especially since the threesome never dreamed that the hours of work would pay off in such a big way. The Telly Awards alone receive more than 13,000 entries to honor the best in local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs as well as the finest in video and film production and work created for the Web.

Niki Brown, a December 2009 graduate from Canyon, Andrew Brown, a May 2009 graduate from Sunray, and Story, a May 2009 graduate from Pampa, traveled to Africa in March 2009 as WTAMU broadcasting students to document the Readership WT trip. The 15-minute documentary shows the emotion and excitement of what the Readership WT Ambassadors experienced while working with children in various African villages. Excerpts of comments by some of the Readership WT Ambassadors complement the documentary with emotional testimony of what the trip meant to them and the impact it has had on their lives.

“We entered most of these contests and festivals on a whim, not expecting to win anything,” Niki Brown said. “We were all so surprised and excited to win awards for this documentary that we poured so much of ourselves into. We are all very passionate about the doc and are so grateful to Readership WT for the incredible experience.”
