Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Dr. Robert Beckley, professor of sociology, was awarded the Norma Williams Distinguished Service Award April 11 at the Southwestern Sociological Association meeting in Denver. The award is given to individuals who follow the legacy of Dr. Norma Williams through service and mentorship. Beckley has given years of service to the field of sociology and exemplifies service and mentorship.

Dr. Bruce Brasington, professor of history, is the author of an essay published in Readers, Texts and Compilers in the Earlier Middle Ages, Studies in Medieval Canon Law in honor of Linda Fowler-Magerl, ed. M. Brett and K. Cushing (Ashgate 2009), 123-135. His essay is titled “Crimina que episcopis inpingere dicis: The Contribution of the Cellectio Polycarpus to an Early Ordo iudciorum.” Fowler-Magerl is an internationally-known scholar of 11th and 12th century canon law and a member of the Stephan Kuttner Institute of Medieval Canon Law at Munich.

Dr. Joe Ella Cansler, associate professor of music, presented “Does Stress and Tension Have to Alter the Quality and Production of the Singer/Presenter Voice? Stress Management and Fear Mastery for Acoustics Sake” at the fourth annual International Conference on the Physiology and Acoustics of Singing Jan. 7-10 in San Antonio. She also was a presenter at the Faculty Research Poster Session March 3 at Cornette Library and at WTAMU’s Women’s Day March 5. Cansler is the author of an article accepted for publication in the College Music Society Symposium Journal. The article is titled “In the Eye of the Storm: Empowerment Through Apprehension Management.”

Dr. Robert DeOtte, associate professor of environmental engineering, was an invited presenter at a graduate seminar Feb. 11 at Oklahoma State University. He made a presentation on agrosecurity to students in the college of agriculture.

Dan Garcia, vice president for enrollment management, Julie Arias, director of College Talent Search, and Martin Lopez, director of Upward Bound, wrote and were awarded a $99,888 College Access Challenge grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The grant is renewable for up to two years and will expand programs that provide outreach to students and their parents in the Texas Panhandle region by providing information and assistance with college opportunities.

Dr. Nabarun Ghosh, associate professor of biology, was appointed in February as a reviewer of the Journal of Biotech Research. The publication provides a publishing platform for faculty and students at all levels to publish works.

Dr. Ty Lawrence, assistant professor of animal science, is the co-author of a paper published in the February Journal of Animal Science. The paper is titled “National Beef Quality Audit 2005: Survey of Targeted Cattle and Carcass Characteristics Related to Quality, Quantity, and Value of Fed Steers and Heifers” 2008.86:3533-3543.

Dr. Vaughn Nelson, professor emeritus of physics, was an invited presenter at the World Wind Industry at Expoenergia 2009 Feb. 24-28 in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. A power point presentation, Industria Eolica del Mundo, is available for download at www.windenergy.org. Nelson also wrote a chapter on wind for the state comptroller-sponsored report on Texas Renewable Energy Resource Assessment. The report can be downloaded at www.seco.cpa.state.tx.us/publications/.

Dr. Duane Rosa, professor of economics, is the author of an article published in the June issue of International Journal of Business and Economics Research, Vol. 8, no. 6. The paper is titled “Optimal Utilization of Alternative Energy Sources.”

Claudia Stuart, instructor of criminal justice and sociology, was an invited presenter at the Oxford University Round Table on Social Justice: Poverty, Food and Race April 22-29 in Oxford, England. Her presentation was titled “Ensuring Diversity through Organizational Cultural Competency.” She also is the co-author of a book titled Images of America, African Americans in Amarillo. Co-author is Dr. Jean Stuntz, associate professor of history, and the book was released May 11 by Arcadia Publishing.

Dr. Pat Tyrer, associate professor of English, served as the women’s studies area chair for the Southwest Texas Popular Culture and American Culture Association conference Feb. 25-28 in Albuquerque, N.M. She also presented a paper titled “Cooking up the Fantastic in Like Water for Chocolate.”

Cliff Vanderpool, director of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, was elected president of the Texas Association of Museums (TAM) during the association’s annual conference March 17-20. He will preside over the board of trustees and will hold responsibility for the management and governance of TAM. His term will expire in 2011.
