Annual Shack-A-Thon/Give-A-Goat Kicks Off April 17 at WTAMU

CANYON, Texas—West Texas A&M University student will participate in a unique display of poverty when the fifth annual Shack-A-Thon/Give-A-Goat program kicks off at 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 17 on the lawn southeast of Old Main.

The event challenges students to build and sleep overnight in shacks they construct of cardboard, wooden pallets and duct tape. The village of shacks can be viewed during a special program at 7:30 p.m. April 17 near the east steps of Old Main. Funds raised during the event will help purchase a large number of goats for milk and meat for people in the Kenyan region of Turkana. Every $50 donation covers the cost of the goat, veterinarian fees, minimal dairy business equipment and delivery of the goat to the Turkana region.

Five WTAMU campus ministries are uniting for the fifth consecutive year in this event to buy even more goats. The WT Alliance, a coalition of campus ministers from West Texas A&M University, originated during the fall of 2008. Five campus ministries are represented in the alliance: Buffs for Christ (Church of Christ Bible Chair), BSM (Baptist Student Ministry), CSC (Catholic Student Center), NAVS (Navigators) and The Wesley (Methodist Student Ministry). The participants unite at common points of belief while maintaining and respecting theological differences. Even though the WT Alliance primarily focuses on a monthly prayer meeting for the campus, the ministers also unite in planning campus and community-wide service projects.

The WT Alliance has partnered with the Christian Relief Fund (CRF) of Amarillo since 2009 to help people in Southern Sudan. For the second consecutive year, they are working with CRF to help the people struggling in Turkana.
