The Cornette Library
is joining The Texas A&M University System
Library Automation Consortium
in the Spring of 2000.

Any questions?...

Nota bene: After May 15, 2000, only Buff Gold cards and other cards issued directly by the Cornette Library, such as Friends of the Cornette Library members' cards, will be valid to check materials out of the library. Your Buff Gold/Cornette Library card will not be valid at other HLC libraries. If you are a resident of a community with an HLC library, you may obtain an HLC card from the public library in your hometown.

Q. Doesn't the Cornette Library already belong to a consortium called "HLC"?

A. Yes, the library has been a member of the Harrington Library Consortium since HLC was founded in the early 1980s. Its membership in HLC, and participation in a number of HLC programs, will continue. For its automated catalog and circulation system, however, the library is joining The Texas A&M University System consortium.

Q. Why is this change being made?

A. The Cornette Library already offers its users a number of benefits as a result of the University's affiliation with the A&M System. Databases are purchased jointly with other A&M System libraries, and there is valuable collegial interaction between A&M System librarians regarding policies and services. By participating in the A&M System automation consortium, the Cornette Library will be building on its relationship with other academic libraries in one of the nation's premier university systems.

Q. What does this change mean to library users?

A. There will be a new look to the Cornette Library's online catalog, and it will no longer be combined with the catalogs of other libraries. It will still be easy to search the catalogs of other libraries, however, including the catalog of HLC; and the patrons of other libraries will still have easy online access to WTAMU's catalog. There will also be changes regarding library cards.

Q. Will I still be able to use my HLC card in the Cornette Library?

A. No. After May 15, 2000, only Buff Gold cards and other cards issued directly by the Cornette Library, such as Friends of the Cornette Library members' cards, will be valid to check materials out of the library. Your Buff Gold/Cornette Library card will not be valid at other HLC libraries.

Q. How will I check books out of other HLC libraries?

A. If you are a resident of a community with an HLC library, you may obtain an HLC card from the public library in your hometown. Borrowing privileges at libraries in our region and throughout Texas are also available to students and employees of WTAMU through cooperatives such as TexShare. For more information on these arrangements, please inquire at the circulation desk. The Cornette Library's interlibrary loan service, which can obtain materials from a nationwide network of libraries, is also available to WTAMU students and employees.

Q. Will persons other than WTAMU students and employees be able to borrow materials from the Cornette Library?

A. The Cornette Library has reciprocal borrowing agreements with a number of other public and academic libraries, and it offers borrowing privileges to members of the Friends of the Cornette Library. More information is available at the library's circulation desk. Also, please remember that while the students and faculty of the University are accorded certain priorities in service, the Cornette Library welcomes the public to use its collection on-site.

Q. When will the new automation system be operational?

A. It will take several months to implement the new system. The library plans to unveil its new catalog in August.
