Speech Camp 2007: Cornette Library Orientation - Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Purpose: To acquaint you with materials in Cornette Library and on the World Wide Web that will make it easier to do research for your Lincoln-Douglas debates.
Reference Sources
- Excellent place to start research.
- Provide background information.
- Include basic information sources like dictionaries, encyclopedias, bibliographies, chronologies, and research guides.
Guides to Research
- Provide list of sources (books, articles, etc.) for specific subjects. May include annotations.

- Searchable online version. Describes the coverage and emphasis of various sources, including core philosophy journals.
Subject Encyclopedias
- Provide in-depth, scholarly articles, focused on a specific subject or discipline. Often include bibliographies.
- The Encyclopedia of Philosophy
- B41 .E5 1996 Reference
- Eight volume set, with an additional Supplement volume. Articles on major schools of thought and individual philosophers. Index in Volume 8, cumulative index in Supplement volume.
- Concise Encyclopedia of Western Philosophy and Philosophers

- Single volume, with emphasis on the major thinkers and concepts of Western philosophy
Subject Dictionaries
- Provide short definitions, focused on terminology, issues and people in a specified discipline.
- Black's Law Dictionary
- KF156 .B53 1999 Reference
- Defines legal terminology, sometimes with case law citation. Also includes legal maxims, U.S. Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
- Library has the 4th through the 8th editions.
- Dictionary of Philosophy
- B41 .L32 1976 Reference
- Terminology and biography, with a focus on Western thought.
- Dictionary of World Philosophy

- Includes a substantial number of terms from Eastern philosophy and tradition.

- Includes books, government documents, videos, journal titles, etc. available throughout the Library. Suggested searches include:
- a keyword search for your subject, such as famous philosophers.
- the general LC subject heading philosophy.
- the LC subject heading for a specific time and place such as philosophy American -- 19th century.
To determine the most appropriate subject headings for your search, refer to the red Library of Congress Subject Headings near the Reference computers in the Library or search the online Library of Congress Authorities Catalog.

Provide current information
- Library shelves contain more than 1500 bound and current journals.
- Microform (film or fiche) available for dozens of leading newspapers, as well as other periodicals.
- Databases index articles found in journals and magazines.
- Citation only;
- Citation and a short summary of the article (abstract);
- Full text;
- General, covering many kinds of topics, and specialized, for specific disciplines.
How to Access Databases

- Database citations not in full-text may be located in the library catalog, or the list of online journals.

- Full-text of current philosophy journals. Very unusual search interface. ON-CAMPUS USE ONLY.
- Academic Search Complete
- Contains abstracts and citations for a broad range of topics, with over 3,000 full-text sources. Can search by either keyword or LC Subject headings. Can also browse contents of specific journal. TexShare database.
- Eighteenth Century Collections Online
- Digitized images of original documents written in the 18th century, primarily British. Full-text searching, limit to category "Religion and Philosophy", can also limit to author or known title. ON-CAMPUS USE ONLY.
- JSTOR
- Scholarly journals in fields such as philosophy, language, and political science. All of material is full-text, but "moving wall" limits to issues before the most recent 3-5 years. Search full-text, titles, or authors. Can also browse contents of specific journal. ON-CAMPUS USE ONLY.
- Religion & Philosophy Collection
- Mostly full-text. Includes philosophy journals with Western, European, Asian, and Jewish emphasis. Can search by keyword or subject, and browse journal contents. TexShare database.
- When You Return Home
