Focus Group: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a focus group?
A focus group is a type of qualitative research in which a group of 10 to 20 participants share their opinions on a topic. A focus group is a moderated discussion that takes up to 90 minutes to cover the discussion of related topics.

Why is WTAMU conducting focus groups?

WTAMU President J. Patrick O’Brien and the WTAMU faculty/staff are preparing for both the Centennial Celebration and for WTAMU’s second century. The faculty and staff have finished a Strategic Plan and have identified campus priorities in academic and scholarship needs as well as building rehabilitation and new construction to meet the Strategic goals.  They are testing the alumni and supporter responses to these planning documents to determine their level of acceptance and support.

How was I selected to be a focus group participant?
The Institutional Advancement staff reviewed active alumni, donors and influential graduates to create list of prospective focus group participants. You are considered someone whose opinion is important because you are on one or more of these lists.

What is in it for me to participate in one of these focus groups?
There will be a total of 20 focus groups in five important Texas markets. Only 200 participants will be involved. Your participation is important to WTAMU and to you because:
    1.      You will continue to be consulted on future developments to ensure that plans are consistent with the recommendations of a trusted advisory group;
    2.    You will be giving direct input to Dr. O’Brien as he plans for WTAMU’s second century; and
    3.      You will either be provided a complimentary WTAMU alumni membership or you will be given a  gift membership that you can share with another WTAMU alumni of your acquaintance.

What is my commitment to be a focus group participant?
Your commitment will be to fully participate in the 90-minute focus group that you select. You also will have to plan the commuting time to and from the session on that day.  We believe that you should reserve three hours to fully participate.

What is the culmination of this focus group process?
The institutional advancement staff will present the executive summary of the focus group findings to the alumni and Foundation boards at their July 13 planning retreat.  They will respond to the findings and provide direction to the institutional advancement staff for a fund-raising campaign to meet the goals outlined in the Strategic Plan and priority list.

All focus group participants will continue to be informed of the progress of the project and will receive periodic executive summaries. You will have the opportunity to track the progress at www.buffalum.com.
