Focus Group Results San Antonio, April 3 West Texas A&M University alumni in the San Antonio area came together recently to discuss the most effective ways the University can prepare for a successful second century of education and service. Graduates of the last 50 years talked about WTAMU memories, the common interest to stay connected to each other, contribution preferences, the chartering of local alumni chapters and the best forms of media for WT to deliver its message. The focus group gathered crucial information that will be compiled to create positive advancement throughout WTAMU. The participants were multiple degree graduates; an online graduate and two former WT staff members. The eight participants expressed strong support and pride for WT, and noted that many personal relationships with faculty, staff and students continue to this day. They discussed an enthusiastic interest in establishing a local alumni chapter, along with a willingness to help in organizing it. They recognized WT for it's unique educational niches, it's safe, personal and welcoming atmosphere and it's modest fundraising requests of alumni. Memory of being a Buff: I transferred from Tarleton and North Texas, I liked the size of WT and the personal interest of the professors. Mr. Gillis helped me graduate and become an IA teacher. Aubrey I remember the old SUB with the line ladies that always remembered your favorite order. Rosalind The professors in the geology department were like surrogate fathers to me. David My online experience was great. Michelle Perception of WT today: WT has a strong NCAA Division 2 sports program. Rosalind Fine Arts programs like drama, dance, theater and broadcasting are all attractive niches. Michelle WT has smaller classes where students receive more individual attention. Aubrey The affordable education available at WT is really attractive. David What does an alumni want to know? Give me amazing student stories and let me know about alumni that are accomplishing things. Michelle What cool research things are the faculty doing? Rosalind I would like to receive a list of alumni who live in my area. Aubrey Let me know about WT events that might be happening in my hometown. Michelle Give us a sense of what life is like on the WT campus today. Aubrey How would you want to know? I would like a choice between a print magazine and an online magazine. Michelle Older alumni who might not be computer savvy prefer a printed option. Aubrey How frequently would you like to hear? A monthly enewsletter in with information about progress and upcoming event dates would be attractive. Michelle Fundraising Priorities? WT should upgrade facilities regularly to meet the expectations of today's students. Aubrey We have to appeal to future students by having quality professors and quality housing. Michelle Memory of being a Buff: Band activities created an instant community for me, and then I added theater and work at the radio station. I never felt like a number. Cathy It was a wonderful place for me to learn. It was my home. Jennifer The professors were very personal. They knew your name and cared about you. Christie It was an opportunity for me to find out who I am. WT gave me a chance to become involved and develop my personality. Kelsey Sammy Artho and Harry Hueston were helpful professors and advisers. Jennifer Perception of WT today: WT is a great campus where students can find support if they need it. Cathy WT is a great educational value. Jennifer I am pleased with the substancial diversity on the WT campus. Cathy What does an alumni want to know? Keep me informed about new programs, construction, details on professors and Centennial events. Cathy I would like a calendar to know about social events. Jennifer Tell us about student and graduate accomplishments, highlight professors and their publications and report on University events. Kelsey Tell me about specific needs or campaigns so that I can choose what to donate to. Jennifer How would you want to know? I like formal invitations for events and special recognitions. Kelsey Email is the best way to get my attention. Cathy I would like alumni to have a choice on what would be most effective for them. Kelsey How frequently would you like to hear? Regular communication is important, so I would like something at least quarterly. Kelsey Send me something at least monthly, especially during the Centennial. Cathy Fundraising Priorities? Endowments are the best way to support programs and to build for the future. Cathy Dorms and buildings are important aspects of the campus. Kelsey Student body growth is critical because they are the customers. Cathy I would give to programs that enhance the first year experience because of it's important impact on students. Kelsey |
