Focus Group Results Dallas, April 17 West Texas A&M University alumni in the Dallas area came together recently to discuss the most effective ways the University can prepare for a successful second century of education and service. Graduates of the last 50 years talked about WTAMU memories, the common interest to stay connected to each other, contribution preferences, the chartering of local alumni chapters and the best forms of media for WT to deliver its message. The focus group gathered crucial information that will be compiled to create positive advancement throughout WTAMU. The participants recognized that WT is making progress in a range of areas. Campus renovations, University programs and technology upgrades are changing the face of education at WT. They also acknowledged that many alumni are successful in business and industry, and that can be an advantage for the WT Career Services program that helps students and employers match needs with skills. Favorite professors of the group were Dr. Sue Park and Dr. Bacon. Unique academic niches and "academic rigor" were also mentioned as things that differentiate WT from its larger school competitors. Memory of being a Buff: As a Cyber Buff my recollection is Dr. Sue Park. I was impressed by the easy access to her and her peronalized guidance. It was a genuine, streamlined and comfortable process. Ramon I recall Stafford Hall, campus life, the dorm and student life experiences. It was a delightful time for me. I met a lot of friends and was fully involved in all aspects of campus life. Richard Perception of WT today: WT provides an affordable, personalized education. Richard WT has a little more spice than other online programs. Ramon I'm glad Canyon gives an alternative A&M location other than just College Station. Richard What does an alumni want to know? I would like detailed alumni demographics by geographic area with a list of alumni living in the area. Ramon Report what changes are taking place at WT like buildings, new programs and degrees and faculty recognition. Richard Highlight alumni and what impact they are having, and also emphasize networking opportunities. Ramon It could be helpful to promote events that include career days and business trade shows for students and alumni to cross-pollinate. Ramon How would you want to know? As a Cyber Buff, anything digital works for me. Emails are easy and I can forward them. Ramon Keep the West Texan, but add a PDF version on the website to broaden the appeal to alumni of differing generations. Richard Consider video links showing the campus or have a video campus tour. Ramon How frequently would you like to hear? Monthly email updates are attractive to me. Ramon Have a consistant, regular schedule that an alumnus can count on. Richard Fundraising Priorities? Promote endowments to establish a sustainable revenue stream for scholarship and academics. Richard |
