Focus Group Results Austin, April 2 West Texas A&M University alumni in the Austin area came together recently to discuss the most effective ways the University can prepare for a successful second century of education and service. Graduates of the last 50 years talked about WTAMU memories, the common interest to stay connected to each other, contribution preferences, the chartering of local alumni chapters and the best forms of media for WT to deliver its message. The focus group gathered crucial information that will be compiled to create positive advancement throughout WTAMU. The Austin participants recommended using the Centennial to establish an annual WT celebration that gives the opportunity to tell the story of heritage and promise. Local residents were excited to be able to share their WT experience and to help recruit students. They pointed out that many well-placed and influential WT alumni dominate Texas government, education and business proving that WT graduates have an impact in the Panhandle, Texas and the world. Memory of being a Buff: When I returned to WT from UT, I found it welcoming, small and friendly I knew everyone, got involved and did not have enough time to do it all. Mitzi There was a sense of togetherness; we had close relationships with students and professors, many that continue today. Nancy The variety of student organizations gave me lots of places to fit in, unlike larger schools. Brian Perception of WT today: WT offers a quality education at a very affordable price. It has small classes and dedicated professors that add to the value. Debbie Parents like that WT is safe and provides a quality education at an exceptional value. Nancy People all over associate the buffalo mascot with WT. Debbie What does an alumni want to know? Identify alumni who are making a difference. Elvin I want to know what is happening on campus now. What changes are taking place? Who is doing things? What are the new courses and programs? Nancy Give me details on the Centennial and events that are happening. Brian WT alumni run Texas in a variety of key state postitions. Emphasize the impact of alumni in their different roles in Texas government. Debbie What alumni are living in various metro areas? Mitzi Tell me key elements: new programs, changing needs and alumni opportunities. Stephanie How would you want to know? Give alumni a choice of print of an enewsletter, and focus on social networking to renew friendships and allegiance to WT. Nancy Send me regular emails so that I feel informed. Mitzi I prefer emails and newsletters. Brian Fundraising Priorities? Appeal to the alumni to support endowments for faculty and facilities because they ensure the future and stability of WT. Elvin Facilities like dorms will make WT more competitive and bring in more students. Debbie Dorms and student amenities should be a priority to stay competitve.
