Why Route 66?

Borrowing the name of the iconic “Mother Road” of the American highway system, the Route 66 Writing Project’s name was chosen to symbolize our efforts to connect educators in innovative ways and to provide a path to travel though our writing experiences together.

Our Mission

The mission of the Route 66 Writing Project is to improve the teaching of writing and to improve learning in the Panhandle Plains schools. Through the National Writing Project’s professional development model, the Route 66 Writing Project recognizes the primary importance of teacher knowledge, expertise, and leadership. The Route 66 Writing Project believes that access to high-quality educational experiences is a basic right of all learners and a cornerstone of equity. By building an extensive network of teachers, the Route 66 Writing Project seeks to promote exemplary instruction of writing in every Panhandle Plains school district.
