Certification Requirements

This page contains information on the Post Bac program content coursework that must be completed for certification in particular teaching fields in the grade levels of: EC-4, 4-8, 8-12, and EC-12.

Additional Content Requirements by Certification Areas

Early Childhood – Grade 4 Certification (3 options)

All EC-4 Certifications:
  • 24 hours with a GPA not less than 2.5 in a combination of math, English, science, and social studies; also Texas government and speech
  • 21-30 hours Professional Development coursework
EC-4 Generalist 9 hours of reading and 6 hours of early childhood courses will be provided as a requirement of each program
EC-4 Bilingual Generalist 6 hours of reading, 6 hours of early childhood, and *9 hours of Spanish (bilingual education content)
EC-4 ESL Generalist 6 hours of reading, 6 hours of early childhood, and *6 hours of English (ESL education content)

Middle school (4-8) Subject Areas*

All 4-8 Certifications:
  • 24 hours with a GPA not less than 2.5 in a combination of math, English, science, and social studies; also Texas government and speech
  • 21-30 hours Professional Development coursework
  • 6 – 9 hours of reading will be provided as a requirement of each program
Single Content Areas require 24 hours (12 advanced) to include:
English Language Arts and Reading 4-8 18 hours English (ENGL 3311 required); (12 advanced hours) 6 hours speech
Social Studies 4-8 9 hours history (HIST 4316, Texas History required) 3 hours economics; 6 hours political science; 6 hours geography
Mathematics 4-8 24 hours of math to include college algebra, pre-calculus or trigonometry, and college geometry
Science 4-8 8 hours physical science, 8 hours life science 4 hours geology/earth science, 4 hours additional science
Combined Areas require 30 + hours with a minimum of 15 advanced
English Language Arts and Reading/Social Studies 4-8 9 hours English (ENGL 3311 required), 3 hours speech, 3 hours economics, 3 hours geography, 3 hours political science, 9 hours history (HIST 4316, Texas history required)
Mathematics/Science 4-8 9 hours history (HIST 4316, Texas History required) 3 hours economics; 6 hours political science; 6 hours geography
Generalist 4-8 Additional requirements (39 hrs):
9 hours English (ENG 3311 required), 3 hours speech, 3 hours economics, 3 hours geography, 3 hours political science, 3 hours history (HIST 4316 Texas history), 6 hours math (College Algebra and College Geometry required), 9 hours sciences (to include Life, Earth, and Physical science)

Secondary (8-12) Subject Areas*

Single Subject Areas 8-12:
  • 24 hours minimum with at least 12 advanced and a GPA not less than 2.5 (*content is determined by departmental requirements) in one of the following areas.
  • Professional Development (21-30 hrs)
Computer Science History Life Science/Biology
Journalism Mathematics Spanish
Speech Communications Technology Applications (for Business and Mass Comm degree only)
Combined/Composite Areas 8-12:
English Language Arts and Reading 8-12 48 hours total (18 advanced) in English, journalism, speech and reading:
  • 24 hours in English, and
  • 6 hours minimum in each of the other 3 areas
Physical Science 8-12 48 hours total (18 advanced hours overall) in chemistry, physics and mathematics with a GPA not less than 2.5:
  • 18 hours (6 advanced) each in chemistry and physics, and
  • 12 hours of mathematics to include Calculus 1 and 2
Science 8-12 48 hrs total (18 advanced hours overall) in life science, chemistry, physics, earth science/geology, and math with a GPA not less than 2.5:
  • 24 hrs in life science (12 advanced)
  • 15 hrs of chemistry (including inorganic chemistry)
  • 8 hrs each in physics and earth science/geology
Social Studies 8-12 48 hours total (18 advanced) in history, political science, economics and geography:
  • 18 hours each in history and political science
  • 6 hours each in economics and geography
Business 6-12 48 hours total (18 advanced) in a combination of business areas with GPA not less than 2.5 (3 hours in a college level keyboarding class is required and should be taken as a transfer course)
Vocational Ag Science & Technology 6-12 Degree in Agriculture, Ag Ed courses to be determined by Ag department advisor

All-level (EC-12) Subject Areas

  • 36-48 hours total (18 advanced) in one of the following content areas
  • Professional Development (21-30 hrs)

EC-12 Generic Special Education & EC-4 Generalist

  • 24 hours with a GPA not less than 2.5 in a combination of math, English, science, and social studies; including Texas government and speech
  • 12-18 hours of Special Education coursework
  • 6 hrs of reading coursework and 6 hrs of early childhood coursework
  • 21-30 hours Professional Development coursework
