Bachelor of Music (B.M.) Degree

Major in Music Therapy (Major Code: 206)

Students completing this degree program will be prepared to enter music therapy profession. Following all course work and a six-month internship, students are eligible for membership with the American Music Therapy Association. Students also are eligible to take a national certification exam. Upon successful completion of this exam, students will receive board certification (MT-BC).

University Core Curriculum Requirements

Refer to the “University Core Curriculum” section of the catalog.

NOTE: Music majors cannot receive core credit for MUSI 1306.
MUSI 1208 and 1209 satisfies “Visual and Performing Arts” in the core curriculum. Laboratory science is BIOL 2401 and 2402.

Music Core Requirements

  • MUSI 1372, 1208, 1373, 1209, 2371, 2372, 2373, 3105, 3347, 3349; MUAP 3086 (two hours).
  • MUAP 10XX (two credit hours for each of four semesters).
  • MUAP 30XX (two credit hours for each of two semesters).
  • Four semester hours from MUSI 3256, 3263, 3264, 3265, 3266, 3267, 3268, 3269, 3270.
  • MUSI 2172, 2173, 2274 (three enrollments), 3175, 3176, 3278, 3279, 4276, 4277, 4378, 4398.
  • Major ensemble (two or more semester hours).

Required Music Courses for Emphases

Keyboard Emphasis

  • MUSI 3232 and 3037 (one hour).
  • MUSI 3135 (two enrollments).
  • Two semester hours of MUSI 2171 or MUAP 1081 (one hour per semester) or MUSI 3233, 3234, 3238.

Instrumental Emphasis

  • MUSI 3232 and 3037 (one hour).
  • MUSI 3135.
  • Four one-hour enrollments in piano with a grade of “C” or better from MUSI 1180, 2180, MUAP 1069, 3069.

Voice Emphasis

  • MUSI 3232 and 3037 (one hour).
  • Four one-hour enrollments in piano with a grade of “C” or better from MUSI 1180, 2180, MUAP 1069, 3069.

Required Courses from Other Departments

  • 15 semester hours behavioral sciences—PSYC 2301, 3360, EDSP 4351, and one elective course in behavioral sciences; one course from SOCI 1301 or ANTH 2351.

Other Requirements

  • Students must receive approval from the director of music therapy before entering the music therapy professional sequence (MUSI 2274, 3175, 3176, 3278, 3279, 4276, 4277, 4378, 4398). Students may apply for acceptance into the sequence during the first month of the first semester of the sophomore year (third semester at WTAMU).

Complete applications will be reviewed only twice per year. For admission requirements and application procedures, see the director of music therapy.

  • Students must receive a “C” or better in all music therapy courses (MUSI 2172, 2173, 2274—three enrollments, 3175, 3176, 3278, 3279, 4276, 4277, 4378).
  • Students enrolling in MUSI 2274, 3175, 3176, 4398 will need to have liability insurance. For details and application procedure, see the director of music therapy.
  • A minimum of eight semesters of major ensemble (two credit hours each long-term semester).
  • Recital, concert, weekly seminar and departmental meeting attendance.
  • Satisfactory senior recital performance before graduation. (This recital may feature the student’s major instrument, music therapy demonstration or a combination of these. If a music therapy demonstration is included, it must involve performances on the student’s major instrument plus another instrument.)
  • Students must satisfactorily (which means a grade of “C” or better in MUSI 4398) complete a six-month internship with an approved institution prior to being awarded the degree.
