Bachelor of Music (B.M.) Degree

Major in Music Therapy (Major Code: 223)

Students completing this degree program will be prepared to enter music therapy profession. Following all course work and a six-month internship, students are eligible for membership with the American Music Therapy Association. Students also are eligible to take a national certification exam. Upon successful completion of this exam, students will receive board certification (MT-BC).

Keyboard Emphasis

  • MUSI 3232, 3037 (one hour), 3135 (one hour).
  • Three hours from MUSI 3280, 2171, 3233, 3234, 3238 or MUAP 1081 (two one-hour enrollments)..

Instrumental Emphasis

  • MUSI 3086, 3232, 3037 (one hour), 3135 (one hour).
  • Four one-hour enrollments in piano with a grade of “C” or higher from MUSI 1181, 1182, 2181, 2182, MUAP 1069, 3069.
  • Four one-hour enrollments in piano with a grade of “C” or higher from MUSI 1181, 1182, 2181, 2182, MUAP 1069, 3069.

Voice Emphasis

  • MUSI 3086, 3232 and 3037 (one hour).
  • Four one-hour enrollments in piano with a grade of “C” or higher from MUSI 1181, 1182, 2181, 2182, MUAP 1069, 3069.

Other Requirements

  • Students must receive approval from the director of music therapy before entering the music therapy professional sequence (MUSI 2274, 3175, 3176, 3278, 3279, 4276, 4277, 4378, 4398). Students may apply for acceptance into the sequence during the first month of the first semester of the sophomore year (third semester at WTAMU).

Complete applications will be reviewed only twice per year. For admission requirements and application procedures, see the director of music therapy.

  • Students must receive a “C” or better in all music therapy courses (MUSI 2172, 2173, 2274—three enrollments, 3175, 3176, 3278, 3279, 4276, 4277, 4378).
  • Students enrolling in MUSI 2274, 3175, 3176, 4398 will need to have liability insurance. For details and application procedure, see the director of music therapy.
  • A minimum of eight semesters of major ensemble (two credit hours each long-term semester).
  • Students must enroll in Music Recital (MUSI RCTL) every semester they are in rolled in nine or more hours.
  • Recital, concert, weekly seminar and departmental meeting attendance.
  • Satisfactory senior recital performance before graduation. (This recital may feature the student’s major instrument, music therapy demonstration or a combination of these. If a music therapy demonstration is included, it must involve performances on the student’s major instrument plus another instrument.)
  • Students must satisfactorily (which means a grade of “C” or better in MUSI 4398) complete a six-month internship with an approved institution prior to being awarded the degree.
