How has being a McNair Scholar enhanced your academic experience? Becoming a McNair Scholar was a priceless opportunity that better equipped me for dental school. McNair Scholars opened up doors that I did not know were possible. They gave me knowledge that will last me a lifetime, granted me invaluable resources, prepared me for professional school. The McNair Scholars challenged me and shaped me into a better scholar. I am excited to take what I learned from the McNair scholars and apply that towards dentistry.

Jonathan Espinosa

Career Aspirations: :  I hope to attend graduate school at the University of California – Berkeley where I will seek both a law degree and a masters in journalism, concurrently. I plan to utilize the skills earned at Berkeley to seek a position as a federal public defender in the United States Court System.  I also hope to work in the field of advocacy, especially for the LGBTQIA community, by acting as a legal representative to join the find in ending discrimination.

Extra Curricular Interest: When not pursuing my academic endeavors, I enjoy being in the kitchen and experimenting with new recipes.  I also enjoy watching movies, with horror being my genre of choice.

How has being a McNair Scholar enhanced your academic experience?Being a scholar in the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Program has proven to be one of the most fulling and rewarding experiences of my undergraduate career.  By utilizing my ability to think critically, I have come to not only appreciate academic research, but I have gained a better understanding of what will be expected of me as I pursue various degrees at both the graduate and post graduate levels.

Career Aspirations: I want to get a Doctorate Degree and one day come back to teach in a University.

Extra Curricular Interest: I am part of President’s Ambassadors. I am an active member of Adelante, a leadership conference, making an impact on local community and community service. I’ve been a tour guide with Campus Services for two years. I love travelling and as a personal goal or tradition, I try to travel once a year somewhere new every time.

How has being a McNair Scholar enhanced your academic experience? McNair Scholar has really given me a new set of opportunities and networking abilities in a field I never thought I would be part of, research. This program gave me confidence to perform research, present about it, and even aspire for an academic goal as big as a Ph.D. It definitely made possible, with the help of my mentor, to find out more on a topic that I was interested putting two important part of my life in one research project: the care of a patient as a nurse, and Hispanics. McNair, one of the best projects I have decided to embark myself, was a task that required time managment, organization and planning, and I encourage every student to experience it.

Extra Curricular Interest: : I am the Community Service Officer for the Hispanic Student Association, I am a Rogers LEAD WT Scholar, and I am an active member of the Pre-Healthcare club.

How has being a McNair Scholar enhanced your academic experience? Being a McNair Scholar has really given me confidence in my ability to perform research. Doing research gave a better understanding of the physical therapy field as well as about graduate school.

The research experience establishes me over my peers pursuing the same academic career. Allowing me to develop and increase my professionalism and forming my character as a successful candidate for medical school. I thank the McNair Scholars institution for providing me with this opportunity.

Extra Curricular Interest: I run on the Track and Field Team for West Texas A&M University in which I run the 100m, 200m, and 4by100m relay. I am also a huddle leader for Fellowship of a Christian Athlete (FCA). 

How has being a McNair Scholar enhanced your academic experience? McNair has given me opportunities that I never knew an undergraduate could have. Not only was I able to investigate more about topic that I was curious about and carry out a research project, I was also able to learn more about my field of psychology, through my mentor and the different traveling opportunities that I got because I was a McNair Scholar. This program really changed my perspective and gave the confidence to want to apply and want to get my Ph.D. This by far, was the best decision I’ve made at West Texas A&M University, to become a McNair Scholar.

How has being a McNair Scholar enhanced your academic experience?Being a McNair Scholar has helped me gain knowledge of the wind power industry as a whole that could help me become an engineer in that field which is my ultimate goal. Being able to do research was a great learning experience different than that of a general classroom setting. I also made great friends through the program.

Starting the project early in my college career is helpful because I can take a relaxed pace with my project allowing me to focus on classes when I need to. I now have an idea about what to expect from my graduate school experience and how to prepare for admissions.

How has being a McNair Scholar enhanced your academic experience?
