University Core Curriculum Requirements

Refer to the “University Core Curriculum” section of the catalog. Students are advised to complete the University core curriculum requirements during their first two years of classes.

Mass Communications Core Requirements (21 hours)

  • MCOM 2311, 2315 or 3312 or 3322, 3305, 3327, 4302, 3379 or 2327, 4310.

Required Courses for Broadcasting Emphasis -- Electronic Media (21 hours)

  • Three hours MCOM 4398
  • Choose 15 hours from MCOM 2171 (3), 3335, 2331, 1336, 2303, 3310 or 4372.
  • Choose three hours from MCOM 4322, 3306, 4390.

Required Courses for Broadcasting Emphasis -- Film and Recording Industry (21 hours)

  • Three hours MCOM 4398
  • Choose 15 hours from MCOM 1307, 2171 (3), 3335, 2331, 1336, 2303, 3310 or 4372.
  • Choose three hours from MCOM 4322, 3306, 4390. 

Required Courses for Broadcasting Emphasis -- Sports Broadcasting (21 hours)

  • Three hours MCOM 4398
  • Choose 15 hours from MCOM 1307, 2171 (3), 3335, 2331, 1336, 3304, 4390.
  • Three hours MCOM 3171 - Sports Broadcasting Practicum 

Graduation Requirements

Students will present their senior portfolio before a faculty panel the semester they plan to graduate. Included in the portfolio will be a certificate showing writing proficiency.

NOTE: Students majoring in mass communications choose a specialty area from advertising/public relations, broadcasting or print media. Students must complete all courses within the mass communications core with a grade of “C” or better.

Bachelor of Arts Degree

  • MCOM 4398 or 4390.
  • Six hours from POSC 3341, 3313, 4392, ECON 4301, SCOM 3320, 3370, 4301, 4330, 4370.

Bachelor of Science Degree

  • MCOM 4398 or 4390.
  • Six hours from ARTS 1319, 1374, ENGL 3304, 3310, 3331, THRE 3370.
