Investment Series & Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF)

Investment Series

The College of Business Investment Series is devoted to expanding finance knowledge through the Texas Panhandle with a focus on students and the community.  The series is one of the largest sources of scholarships in the College of Business.  Guest speakers attract active investors and professionals in the medical, legal, financial, investment and real estate areas along with business owners.  Speakers in the past have included analysts and economists, mutual fund managers and Federal Reserve economists. The series focuses on insights into future investment horizons. Speakers occasionally talk to students to increase awareness of their firm and the industry.  Dr. Anne Macy, director of the Investment Series, can be reached at 806-651-2523.

Investment Series Speaker Schedule

Speakers for 2010-2011 include Dr. Ken Robinson from the Dallas Federal Reserve, Robert Chapin from Servant Investments, Dr. Harvey Rosenblum from the Dallas Federal Reserve, and Dr. Matthew Medeiros from the Institute of Wealth Management.  Summer 2010 speakers are the Student Portfolio Managers presenting the Annual Report and 2010 stock selections.

SMIF Annual Report

The Student Manged Investment Fund gives finance majors an opportunity to explore investing opportunities with real money.  Students manage a portfolio of University funds and decide on stocks to purchase and sell with a goal of long-term growth.  They learn investment fundamentals like present value, fundamental and technical analysis.  All finance majors explore one or more investment opportunities, which are forwarded to the student portfolio managers for consideration.  Portfolio managers attempt to meet the dual objectives of increasing the long-run value of the portfolio combined with the short-run objective of providing student scholarships.  The student portfolio and the Investment Series produces approximately $10,000 a year in student scholarships.  The student portfolio has grown from an initial value of $100,000 to the current value of over $600,000.  Below is a copy of the SMIF Annual Report:
