Professional Profile

J. Dirk Nelson, Ph.D. Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at West Texas A&M University since 2010, received a baccalaureate degree from Montana State University (he is a member of Montana State’s Society of Centennial Alumni), and he earned two graduate degrees from the University of Kansas.

Teaching and Related Service

He has served in higher education since 1989 and has held multiple administrative appointments for 25 years.  Classes taught include Kinesiology; Health Promotion; Mechanical Analysis of Motor Skills; Nutrition for Human Development; Physiology of Exercise; Fitness Testing and Prescription; Lifetime Wellness; Motor Development. 

He has been involved in multiple community programs and initiatives such as the Ronald McDonald House; the Nurse Family Partnership; Healing the Family Center; the Panhandle Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition; the Special Olympics; the American Heart Association; the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation; Type One area Diabetes Support; as well as a member, teacher and elder with the University Church of Christ.

Research and Creative Activity

Topics for his writings include disease prevention and behavior modification; human athletic performance, student development; pedagogy; academic leadership; and personnel management.

He serves as an editor for the Journal of Nursing & Healthcare, as well as the Symbiosis Online Journal of Nursing & Health Care.

Personal Sketch

Dr. Nelson and his wife Renda (State Director – Better Living for Texans) have two children, Alex of Lubbock, and Emalee of Honolulu, Hawaii. He and Renda enjoy house renovating as well as many outdoor activities.
