M.A. Degree Requirements

Admission Requirements

In addition to University requirements for graduate admission, the applicant must submit the following:

  • Cover sheet that includes name, telephone number(s), e-mail address, mailing address and overall undergraduate GPA of the applicant.
  • A one- to two-page, double-spaced, typed essay that includes discussion of:
    • What qualities or experiences has the applicant had that make the applicant a good candidate for graduate study?
    • Plans of the applicant for using the graduate communication degree.
    • Evidence of merit of the applicant (for example, GPA, communication internships, community service, membership in Lambda Pi Eta, etc.)
    • A photocopy of the applicant’s Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores.
  • International students, before applying to the M.A. degree program in speech, must contact the WTAMU International Student Office at (806)651-2073 and inquire about both the application procedures and TOEFL exam policies/requirements.
  • Photocopies of the applicant’s transcripts from all colleges or universities attended. NOTE: The program requires 24 hours of undergraduate course work in communication or a closely related field. Students who do not have the 24 hours may be subject to a certain amount of leveling courses or be asked to provide evidence in support of a waiver of these requirements.
  • At least one letter of recommendation from a faculty member, supervisor, etc.

Core (15 hours)

  • SCOM 6315, 6350, 6380, 6381, and 6382.

M.A. Degree in Communication Emphases

Corporate Communication Emphasis (select for a Generalist Focus)

  • Choose six hours of SCOM electives or from courses external to the communication program at the discretion of the graduate adviser.
  • Thesis Option: Choose nine hours from SCOM 6310, 6320, 6331, 6340, 6355, 6360, 6384, 6385 and six hours of thesis (6301 and 6302).
  • Non-Thesis Option: Choose 12 hours from  SCOM 6310, 6320, 6331, 6340, 6355, 6360, 6384, 6385 and complete SCOM 6304—Research Project in Applied Communication.

Mass Communication Emphasis

  • Complete SCOM/MCOM 6305 and 6330.
  • Thesis Option: Choose nine hours from SCOM/MCOM 6310, 6320, 6340, 6360, 6383, 6395 and six hours of thesis (6301 and 6302 or 6303).
  • Non-Thesis Option: Choose 12 hours from SCOM 6310, 6320, 6340, 6360, 6383, 6395 and complete SCOM 6304 - Research Project in Applied Communication.

Performance Emphasis

  • Choose 15 hours from SCOM 6306, 6310, 6320, 6360, 6385, 6388, 6398, 6399.
  • Three hours of SCOM 6301 and three hours Performance Thesis (SCOM 6303).

Or choose six hours of SCOM electives (6000 level, approved by the graduate director) and 12 hours from THRE 6321, 6335, 6396. (Theatre classes may be repeated once.)

Degree Requirements

Plan I (Thesis)

  • 30 semester hours of 6000 level course work plus six hours of thesis (SCOM 6301 and either 6302 or 6303).
  • Students will present an oral defense of their theses to satisfy the comprehensive exam requirement.

Plan II (Non-Thesis)

  • 36 semester hours, including the 15-hour core.
  • 24 of the 36 semester hours must be at the 6300 level.
  • Completion of SCOM 6304, including a public presentation of research results to satisfy the comprehensive exam requirement.

Optional Minors

With approval of the graduate director, the student may elect a minor field of study for either plan consisting of a maximum of six semester hours.
