National Champions—Again. West Texas A&M had three of the top four individual contestants—including the individual champion and reserve champion—en route to a convincing seventh-consecutive team triumph at the National Reining Horse Association National Championship Nov. 29-30 in Oklahoma City. That’s correct: WTAMU has won this particular and prestigious national championship seven years in succession. This time, Texas A&M University placed second.
Student Masters IBM. A West Texas A&M University student captured second-place honors in the IBM “Master the Mainframe” Competition, which included more than 1,700 students from 325 schools throughout the U.S. and Canada. For his efforts, Anar Huseynov, a senior computer science major from Baku, Azerbaijan, will receive an expense-paid trip to IBM’s mainframe laboratory in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Munitions at Pantex. Students and faculty at West Texas A&M University are conducting important research to quantify the stability of aging explosive crystals stored at the Pantex Plant. WTAMU’s Department of Engineering and Computer Science has received a $400,000 contract from Pantex to conduct a two-year study of the aging characteristics of energetic materials. Pantex is charged with maintaining the safety, security and reliability of the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile.
Math Site No. 1. West Texas A&M University’s Virtual Math Lab (VML) is the top response to a Google search for “college algebra,” “intermediate algebra,” “beginning algebra” and “GRE math.” Add in the fact that WTAMU’s free tutorial website easily exceeded two million visits in 2007 and it is obvious that would-be mathematicians the world over are seeking and getting the help they need from West Texas A&M. People have visited the site from most every country on the planet, from Australia to Zimbabwe.
