    Graduate courses in management and marketing focus on creating a "real world environment" by using business experiences of graduate students in class discussions, case analyses and research reports. Emphasis is placed on using computer tools in the strategic-decision process and developing written- and oral-communication skills through extensive research into current marketing issues. High priority is placed on understanding the role and significance of marketing to the success of domestic and international business.


Course Descriptions

General Business (GBUS)

    Students having taken undergraduate "stacked" courses at WTAMU that have a graduate component cannot take the graduate course if they have already received credit for the corresponding undergraduate course.

 5500. Business Law. Prerequisites: graduate standing, consent of department head. Legal environment of business, contracts, business organizations, government regulation and application of ethics to each aspect of law. (3 3 0)

 5516. Reading and Conference. Prerequisite: approval of instructor of record. Directed reading and reporting in areas of business related to the student's sphere of concentration. (3 0-3 0)

 5517. Current Issues in Business. Prerequisite: completion of all M.B.A. degree leveling courses or equivalent. Current issues relevant to business. Focus on issues that are timely and relevant to problems facing decision makers including ethics in business and the impact of the information age. (3 3 0)

 5519. Seminar in International Business Strategy. Prerequisites: MKT 5500, MGT 5500, FIN 5500, or proficiency in these courses in an undergraduate program. International business in foreign environments, integration and coordination of international business operations and strategies and all other activities across national borders, as well as the role/problems of multi-national enterprises, political, social and economic constraints of foreign direct investment, and global operations/strategies. (3 3 0)

 5570. Internship. Prerequisite: approval of department head. One semester of prearranged work in operational activities of designated enterprises. Comprehensive experience in management of special projects. Students will be responsible for periodic reports as required by the instructor. May be repeated once. (3 0 0)


Management (MGT)

 5431. Production and Operations Management. Prerequisite: 330 and BST 250 or equivalent. Study and analysis of planning, design, direction, and control of physical and human resources used in production of goods and services. Emphasis on solutions to operational problems in the physical, locational, storage and general service sub-systems. (3 3 0)

 5432. Critical Issues in Human Resources Management. Examination of human resource management issues related to the changing makeup of the workplace and implications for managing diversity in small and large organizations. Course will raise awareness of diversity and facilitate appreciation of differences and enhanced interactions. (3 3 0)

 5500. Business Management. Prerequisite: graduate standing, consent of department head. Framework of basic knowledge to develop an operational theory of management. Analysis of basic functions of management planning, organizing, directing and controlling. (3 3 0)

 5518. Strategic Management. Prerequisite: FIN 5520, MGT 5534, MKT 5540 or equivalent. Discussion of general management cases concerning analysis, appraisal, formulation, implementation, direction, and control of corporate policy and strategy. (3 3 0)

 5520. Entrepreneurship. Prerequisites: ACC 5500, FIN 5500, MKT 5500, MGT 5500, or proficiency in these courses in an undergraduate program. Interdisciplinary course involving all requirements for starting a business: the idea, market assessment, how to raise funds, exploiting opportunities, legal organization, taxes, entrepreneurial characteristics necessary for success and creation of a business plan. (3 3 0)

 5530. Seminar in International Management. Prerequisite: 5500 or equivalent. Study and application of principles of management to international fields of business organization and cross-cultural operation. The degree of universality of management functions to all phases of business and development. (3 3 0)

 5532. Seminar in Organization Theory. Analysis of theory and practice in designing organization structure. Topics include systems and contingency theories, strategic management, patterns of organization design, technology, size, innovation and change, and information systems and control. (3 3 0)

 5534. Seminar in Organizational Behavior. In-depth explanation of individual and group behavior in organizations. Attitudes and perception, satisfaction, motivation, leadership, conflict, stress and organization, change and development. (3 3 0)

 5536. Advanced Human Resources Management. Prerequisite: 5500. Examination of principles and methodology of Human Resources Management with emphasis on functions of recruitment and selection; training and development, performance appraisal, compensation and labor relations. (3 3 0)


Marketing (MKT)

 5440. International Marketing. Prerequisite: 340 or equivalent. Additional research analysis not covered in the text is required. Special study of current international monetary problems, international political problems and world-trade problems that affect strategies in international marketing. (3 3 0)

 5442. Principles of Advertising. Prerequisite: 340. Nature, scope and contribution of advertising to the firm's problems of demand stimulation. Attention on establishing objectives and budgets for promotional activities and advertiser-agency relationships. Emphasis on technical aspects of advertising layout. Course content is culminated into a full-scale advertising campaign. (3 3 0)

 5444. Retail Marketing. Analysis of factors governing store operations: location, store layout, buying and selling, advertising and display, merchandise planning and control, personnel management, consumer relations, recent trends, and problems connected with retail buying and selling. (3 3 0)

 5446. Sales Management. Prerequisite: 340 or equivalent. An additional research project is required in such areas as planning for a specific sales management seminar and/or construction of specific sales compensation plan. (3 3 0)

 5500. Managerial Marketing. Prerequisite: graduate standing, consent of department head. Description or survey course of our marketing system and investigation of basic responsibilities of marketing executives in business organizations. (3 3 0)

 5540. Seminar in Marketing. Prerequisite: 5500 or equivalent. Business activities involved in moving goods from production to consumption; marketing functions and problems. Developing a philosophy of the role of marketing in the American economy. (3 3 0)

 5548. Marketing Strategy and Policy. Prerequisite: 5540. Emphasis on development of marketing strategies based on the relationship of the firm to social, economic, legal/political, technological and competitive environments. (3 3 0)
