Bachelor's Degree Requirements



(In Addition to General Education Requirements)

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Additional Courses
Fine arts and humanities (12 semester hours minimum)-four courses, including at least six semester hours in foreign languages of their choice. Other credits may be earned in art, English, history, modern languages, music, philosophy or theatre.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Additional Courses
Communications, natural sciences or social sciences (12 semester hours minimum)-four courses, including at least six semester hours in any combination of biology, chemistry, geosciences, geology, mathematics or physics. Other credits maybe earned in any of the preceding subject areas or anthropology, computer informations systems, economics, geography, health, history, sports and exercise sciences, mass communications, political science, psychology, sociology or speech.

Bachelor of General Studies (B.G.S.)
A minimum of 80 semester hours of electives, plus 50 semester hours of general education requirements, with at least a "C" (2.0) average overall. A minimum of 36 semester hours of advanced work (300- to 400-level courses) of which 30 hours must be completed in residence at West Texas A&M University. No more than 36 semester hours earned in one academic discipline may be applied toward the degree.

Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (B.A.A.S.) (Major Code: 601)

Option: Fire Safety and Protection (Major Code: 602)
This degree assumes completion of an associate of applied science degree at a community college or completion of an appropriate occupational certificate prior to starting work on the B.A.A.S. degree at WTAMU. A maximum of 48 semester hours of technical-vocational credits may be transferred toward this degree. An additional 18 semester hours of academic credit may also be transferred to total 66 hours, the maximum number of hours accepted from a community college.

General education requirements and other University requirements including 36 advanced hours, 30 in residence at WTAMU, for a total of 130 semester hours with a minimum grade point average of 2.0. This degree includes a professional development core of 18-24 semester hours, 12 of which must be 300- to 400-level courses.

Maximum Discipline Hours
No more than 60 semester hours in any single discipline may be counted toward a degree except 80 semester hours in music for a B.M. degree, 70 semester hours in nursing for a B.S.N. degree and 84 semester hours in art for a B.F.A. degree. A maximum of six semester hours in religion and a maximum of six semester hours in sports and exercise sciences activities can count toward a baccalaureate degree.
