As a part of the College of Education and Social Sciences, the Department of Sports and Exercise Sciences offers graduate programs designed to meet the needs of persons interested not only in teaching but also in other professions related to exercise and sport sciences. Graduate programs within the department can be geared to meet specific needs and interests of the individual graduate student.

Master of Science (M.S.) Degree, Sports and Exercise Sciences
(Major Code: 5449)
    This degree is designed for persons in various fields of exercise and sport sciences who wish to concentrate their graduate work in those areas.
General Requirements
    Non-thesis, 36 hour program:
      21 -36 hours in sports and exercise sciences, up to 15 hours in other areas. SES 5511,12 hours SES at 5500 level, three hours SES 5300 level or above, six hours SES or other area at 5500 level, nine hours SES or other area at 5300 level or above. Students will be required to pass a written comprehensive examination and an oral comprehensive exam over all graduate course work for the degree.
    Thesis, 30 hour program:
      18-30 hours in sports and exercise sciences, up to 12 hours in other areas. SES 5511, 5501, 5502, six hours SES at 5500 level, three hours SES or other area at 5500 level, nine hours SES or other area at 5300 level or above. No problems courses or recreation internship allowed. Students will be required to pass an oral comprehensive examination of their thesis upon its completion. Also, students will be required to pass a written comprehensive examination and an oral comprehensive exam over all graduate course work for the degree.

Students having taken undergraduate "stacked" courses at WTAMU that have a graduate component cannot take the graduate course if they have already received credit for the corresponding undergraduate course.

    5302. Structural Kinesiology. Principles of anatomy and human movement.

    5304. Measurement and Evaluation Techniques. Basic statistical designs, test administration, data collection and principles of evaluation. Practical experience with school-age students is required.

    5306. Human Sexuality and Family Living. Designed to give background information for understanding sexuality, family living, preparation for marriage and family health problems related to sexuality. Advanced assignments for graduate students.

    5316. Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco. Effects of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco on physiological, mental, and psychological health and well-being with a focus on prevention education for self-responsibility.

    5320. Movement Activities. Acquisition of fundamental (locomotor, manipulative and stability) psychomotor movements and basic sports skills through games, rhythms and self-testing activities for ages five to 10.

    5321. Motor Learning. Assessment of motor development in individuals, infant to adult; instructional applications of motor skills to appropriate levels of development; design of motor-skill acquisition sequences for basic motor skills of running, jumping, throwing, catching, striking, kicking and for complex sport motor skills.

    5325. Health Needs of Children. Knowledge of health needs and problems of children. Advanced assignments for graduate students.

    5341. Physiology of Exercise. Physiological adaptations made by the human body in adjusting to various activities.

    5342. Personal Fitness Concepts. Comprehension of concepts in cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, body composition, stress and nutrition. Ability to design, implement and conduct personal fitness programs is expected. Practical experience with school-age students is required.

    5345. Stress and Mental Health. In-depth study of stress and mental health as it relates to the mentally healthy person as a foundation of well-being.

    5372. Camp Counseling. For students, teachers, counselors and prospective camp counselors who anticipate an opportunity to do group leadership in schools or camps Advanced assignments for graduate students.

    5382. Outdoor Living. Knowledge, techniques and skills necessary for safe enjoyment of family and individual camping. Advanced assignments for graduate students.

    5412. Advanced Athletic Training. Prerequisite: 302 or 5302. Traumatic injuries as related to sports and physical education activities. Advanced assignments for graduate students.

    5413. Sports Conditioning. Prerequisite: 341 or 5341 or consent of instructor. In-depth study of scientific principles concerning strength, flexibility, endurance, speed, power and conditioning capacity for athletics and physical education, and the means to improve these characteristics.

    5422. Exercise and Sport Pedagogy. Techniques and practice of instructing exercise and sport skills including organizational strategies, objectives and lesson design.

    5430. Organization and Administration. Development of administrative skills related to leadership roles: budgeting, purchasing, facility planning, legal implications and management functions related to personnel. Advanced assignments for graduate students.

    5490. Independent Study in Sports and Exercise Sciences. Prerequisite: approval of department head. Independent study, under direction of a faculty member, within the fields of exercise and sports.

    5510. Philosophy and History. Intensive study of philosophical and historical origins of physical education, including leaders, conditions and forces affecting the profession.

    5511. Research Techniques. Critical analysis of the types of research with uses and purposes, library techniques; experience in writing, critiquing and solving problems; statistical tools available and uses with computer programs.

    5521. Sport Psychology. Intensive study of psychological dimensions of sports and fitness activities. Topics may include motives and constraints; adherence; arousal and performance; stress, distress and health; self-efficacy and self-concept; locus of control; attitude toward physical activity; personality and sport; and aggression and violence in sport.

    5522. Sport and Society. Sport as a social and cultural phenomenon. Exploration of the discourse of selected issues of sociological-cultural aspects of sport and exercise. Topics relate to cultural roles of sport, sport as mediator of change, issues of access and gender, sport as social model, and others.

    5525. Science and Practice of Strength Training. Intensive study of current literature concerning design and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for persons involved in various sports. Topics include scientific foundations, testing and evaluation, exercise prescription and analyses of advanced exercise techniques.

    5542. Bioenergetics and Muscle Physiology. Energy and musculoskeletal system response to exercise and sport conditioning.

    5543. Cardiopulmonary and Environmental Physiology. Cardiopulmonary adaptation to exercise and physiological responses to environmental changes.

    5544. Sport Biomechanics. Mechanical and structural analysis of selected sport skills with focus on achieving maximum performance with reduced incidence or absence of participant injury.

    5545. Advanced Fitness Concepts. Investigation of structure, purposes and goals of fitness programs.

    5548. Laboratory Techniques. Introduction to and use of equipment for measurement of physiological response to exercise.

    5550. Individualized Research in Sports and Exercise Sciences. Prerequisite: 5511. Student selects a topic in exercise and sport sciences, designs and proposes a research project to include literature review, testable hypothesis or purpose of study, methodology, data collection, data analysis, and summary, conclusions and recommendations. A formal final paper is required.

    5551. Seminar in Sports and Exercise Sciences. Prerequisite: permission of department head. Investigation and discussion of current issues in the fields of exercise and sport sciences including problems and trends within public and private sectors at local, state or national levels.

    5599. Special Topics. Prerequisite: department head approval. Exploration of an emerging, unique or special topic in sports and exercise sciences.
