West Texas A&M University: 1997-1998 Academic Year

College of Education and Social Sciences

Dr. Ted Guffy, Dean
410 Old Main, 651-2600

The College of Education and Social Sciences grew out of the restructuring of the University under the Strategic Plan in 1986. The College is composed of the Department of Behavioral Sciences; Division of Education Department of History and Political Science; and the Department of Sports and Exercise Sciences.

The College has a dedicated faculty, a large majority with doctorates from prominent universities throughout the country, and more than 1,200 students in 45 major fields of study. Departments of the College of Education and Social Sciences offer master's degree programs in education, sports and exercise sciences, history, political science, professional counseling, psychology and sociology. Graduate programs are designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge of a particular academic discipline and research skills appropriate to the discipline. Students planning to pursue a doctorate should write a thesis; others may find a 36-hour, non-thesis program more appropriate to their career plans. Many of the graduate faculty are engaged in various research projects, and graduate students have an opportunity to share in these endeavors. Laboratory and library facilities provide excellent opportunities for student research. Graduate programs may be designed to meet individual needs within broad degree requirements.
