    Post-baccalaureate work in communication and art lead to master of arts and master of fine arts degrees. The master of fine arts degree with a studio major is the only terminal degree offered by WTAMU and is the required degree for teaching on the college/university level. The master of arts in communication degree provides a broad-based and flexible program of graduate study in the communicative arts.

NOTE: Graduate students in art may concentrate in the areas of painting, drawing, ceramics, metalsmithing/jewelry, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design, computer art, two dimensional art, three-dimensional art and art education.

General Requirements
    For all programs, prospective students must submit a portfolio and complete an interview with art graduate faculty members for admission consideration and to assist students in selecting the course of study best suited to their background and needs. Students accepted into the art graduate program will normally be admitted to the M.A. degree program. Upon completion of 24 semester hours, the student may apply for admission to the M.F.A. degree program.
    In addition to the entrance requirement established for all graduate students to be accepted to major in art, students must:

M.F.A. Degree in Studio Art (60 semester hours)  Upon completion of 24 graduate art hours, the student may apply for admittance to the M.F.A. program by submitting a portfolio and written statement to the art graduate faculty outlining reasons for seeking the degree.

 NOTE: Up to 30 semester hours applied toward the non-thesis M.A. degree in art at WTAMU may also be used to fulfill M.F.A. degree requirements (except ART 5590-M.A. Project). Up to 20 semester hours applied to a M.A. degree at another institution may be applied to M.F.A. degree requirements.

 5546. Special Problems in Computer Art. Prerequisite: 346 or consent of instructor. Advanced projects in computer art. Individual exploration of computer imagery with emphasis on content and production of major professional-quality pieces. May be repeated once. (3 0 0-6)

 5565. Special Problems in Graphic Design. Prerequisite: 465. Advanced individual exploration of problems in graphic design. May involve work in print or non-print media commonly encountered in professional design work. May be repeated. (3 0 0-6)

 5515. Research in Communication Disorders. Research design in behavioral sciences with emphasis in speech-language pathology. Development of a research protocol and design, data analysis and manuscript preparation. (4 3 2)

 5520. Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies. Communication disorders related to anomalies of craniofacial structures, including orafacial clefting of lips and palate. (3 3 0)

 5525. Differential Diagnosis of Communication Disorders. Prerequisite: consent of instructor. Procedures for assessing speech-language disorders in children and adults. Lecture and lab. (4 3 2)

 5530. Aphasia and Related Neurogenic Language Disorders. Assessment and treatment of acquired neurologically based disorders including aphasias, dementia and AlzheimerÕs disease as well as closed-head injuries. (3 3 0)

 5535. Fluency Disorders. Theories, etiology, assessment, personal impact and therapeutic intervention of fluency disorders in children and adults. (3 3 0)

 5540. Clinical Practicum Speech Pathology. Prerequisite: consent of instructor; student must not have provisional admission status. Supervised clinical practicum in speech-language pathology. One hour staffing and three hours of client contact per week per hour credit. May be repeated for credit for a maximum of six hours; additional hour may be obtained in summer sessions. (1-6 0 0)

 5545. Internship. Prerequisite: 5510; consent of instructor (student must consult with clinical coordinator, approval of outside facility).Supervised clinical practicum in speech-language pathology at selected therapeutic sites to provide additional depth and breadth of clinical experience. Maximum of six hours credit. (1-6 0 0)

 5550. Swallowing Disorders. Cognitive and methodologic approaches to research, therapy and training of the preprofessional in the area of swallowing disorders (dysphasia). (3 3 0)

 5555. Advanced Independent Study in Communication Disorders. Various areas of speech-language pathology with attention to individual needs of the student. Emphasis on habilitative and rehabilitative aspects of the field. (3 0 0)

 5560. Aural Rehabilitation. Approaches to aural rehabilitation in children and adults. Introduction to educational audiogy and assistive listening devices. (3 3 0)

 5565. Neural Bases of Communication Disorders. Neuroscience and its application to aspects of normal and disordered communication. (3 3 0)

 5570. Assessment of Articulation and Phonological Disorders. Assessment of articulation and phonological disorders. (3 2 2)

 5575. Language Assessment in the School-Age Child. Language assessment of school-age children. The problems and techniques of assessing the individual with later language development. (3 3 0)

5580. speech science and instrumentation. Normal process of speech production from anatomic, physiologic, kinematic, aerodynamic, acoustic and perceptual perspectives. Emphasis on measurement and analysis techniques, instrumentation and experimental paradigms used to study speech production and perception.(3 2 2 )

5599. Special topics. Various areas of speech-language pathology. attention to individual needs of the student will be a primary objective. Emphasis on habilitative and rehabilitative aspect of the field. may be repeated once for credit.( 3 3 0 )

 5341. Persuasion. Prerequisite: six semester hours of speech, mass communications or business. Theory of human motivation as it operates in individuals and groups. Analysis of persuasive materials and development of persuasive strategies. (3 3 0)

 5345. Discussion and Small Group Communication. Prerequisite: 101 or 103 or 201 plus three hours advanced speech. Research and analysis of small-group communication patterns. Emphasis on training techniques to improve existing small groups and methods of conducting small-group research. (3 3 0)

 5360. Political Communication. Prerequisite: 101 or 201 or instructor's consent. Explores the role of communication in the political process. Emphasis on the functions of rhetoric, great media events, ghost writing, mudslinging and advertising as they relate to politics. (3 3 0)

 5415. Directing Speech Activities. Prerequisite: 207, 222. Designed specifically for teachers who will coach co-curricular speech activities. Rules and coaching techniques for speech activities. (Summer only.) (3 3 0)

 5470. Presidential Rhetoric. Prerequisite: 101 or 201 or consent of instructor. American presidency with specific regard to its role in public persuasion on significant public issues. (3 3 0)

5503 performance thesis. Prerequisite : completion of core and 27 graduate hours. Thesis project which result in a public performance.(3 3 0)

 5506. Seminar in Oral Interpretation. The art of storytelling. Emphasis on performance of storytelling genres. Students will compile a story file, as well as plan, perform and produce an end-of-semester storytelling festival. (3 3 0)

 5507. Seminar in Mass Communication. Historical and theoretical review of mass communication in society. (3 3 0)

 5510. Instructional Training and Development in Communication. Acquaints prospective organizational trainer and/or consultant with significant issues pertaining to design, implementation and assessment of instructional programs. Each student develops a one-day program suitable for a professional audience and presents one module from this program to the class. (3 3 0)

 5515. Theories of Communication. Analysis of concepts, models and pertinent research across the broad spectrum of theory building and contemporary theories of communication. (3 3 0)

 5520. Seminar in Intercultural Communication. Raise consciousness about cultural differences, help students become more competent in intercultural communication and develop strategies for researching intercultural communication. Intercultural communication is the process through insight provided by different perspectives and experiences is gained. (3 3 0)

 5531. Seminar in Organizational Communication Consulting. Review of theories of organizational communication, in-depth study of consulting techniques and research methods in organizational communication. (3 3 0)

 5540. Seminar in Public Communication. Methods of disseminating information in society. Survey of human relations theory, public relations and community relations. (3 3 0)

 5545. Seminar in Small Group Communication. Small-group communication theories and methods of researching small groups. (3 3 0)

 5550. Seminar in Rhetorical Criticism. Method of rhetorical criticism as an approach to answering research questions in communication. Variety of methods and artifacts will be analyzed. (3 3 0)

5555. seminar in nonverbal communication. Analysis of fundamental forms of nonverbal communication . Use of the body in conscious and unconscious gestures, proxemics, kinesics and the effect of these on the environment and culture of the individual.(3 3 0)

 5560. Seminar in Gender Communication. Research in communication literature about how men and women communicate, with emphasis on describing this communication rather than evaluating. Allows students to develop more versatile communication choices in a variety of societal contexts. (3 3 0)

 5580. Introduction to Graduate Communication Studies. Prerequisite: undergraduate degree. Overview of the history and current status of communication research and practice. Instruction in basic research; library and other resources; bibliographical format of research reports in accordance with standard style guides. Should be taken the first semester of graduate enrollment. (3 3 0)

 5581. Seminar in Research Methods. Prerequisite: 5580 or consent of instructor. Methodology, organization and participation in communication research. (3 3 0)

5582. Qualitative research methods. Prerequisite: 5580. Exposure to the experience of qualitative data collection for communication research. Emphasis on observing and interviewing in a field setting and discussing these experiences, supplemented with readings. Upon completion of course, students will be able to design a qualitative study.( 3 3 0)

5584. internship in applied organizational communication research. Prerequisite: 5581 or 5582. Practium in applied organizational communication research. Students will identify an approved organization , which has agreed to a proposed research project . Students will investigate , research, design and complete an applied organizational research project. (3 0 0)

 5585. Communication Instruction at the College Level. Investigation and evaluation of techniques and methods of teaching in various communicative arts. (3 3 0)

5586. forensics internship. Prerequisite: consent of the instructor. Experience with sponsoring, planning and coaching collegiate forensics events. Students will assist with tournaments hosted by WTAMU and will travel with the Forensics Team to at least one tournament.( 3 0 0 )

 5587. Problems in Public Communication. Prerequisite: approval of department head. May be repeated once with approval of department head. (3 0 0)

5588. performance theory. Exploration of performance theory and application of theory in solo performance staged by students.( 3 0 0 )

5589. Speech performance field experience. Students will be assigned to a profit or non-profit organization to assist with the organization's mission, particularly in development of programs in performance studies.(3 0 0)

5590. Current Issues in Communication. Prerequisite: approval of instructor. Special seminars designed to discuss current issues. May be repeated once for credit. (3 3 0)
