Graduate Programs
The master of arts degree in music is designed to
benefit those teaching any phase of music, either privately or in public
schools. The master of music degree is designed to benefit the individual
performer. It is structured in a manner that will allow the student desiring
a performance career to concentrate on performance and academic disciplines
necessary for proper depth and background in the field.
General Requirements for Master of Arts (M.A.) and Master of Music (M.M.) Degrees and Harrington Certificate in String Quartet Performance
Thesis Option (Prose Thesis, Transcription or Composition):
MUS 5501 and 5502, applied music optional
(eight semester hours maximum), graduate-level music courses to equal 30
semester hours.
Non-Thesis Option
Applied music optional (eight semester hours
maximum), graduate-level music courses to equal 36 semester hours.
Other Requirements
Each semester the music major is enrolled in nine
semester hours or more (four semester hours or more in a summer session),
the student must enroll in a major ensemble.
Comprehensive Examination: Candidates will be required to pass
an oral examination over the thesis or the literature in their recital,
depending on the option selected, and the major field of study.

5522. Graduate Choreography. Prerequisite: 422. Continuation of 422. Advanced course in creating dances. May be repeated once for credit. (1 0 0)
5590. Graduate Problems. Advanced exploration and research in the student's major area. May be repeated up to a maximum of six hours. (1-3 0 0)

5411. Symphonic Literature. Prerequisite: 248. Advanced survey examining major categories of symphonic literature. (2 0,2 0)
5412. Song Literature I. Survey course examining major categories of solo vocal literature through the Classic period. (2 0,2 0)
5414. Song Literature II. Prerequisite: 412 or consent of instructor. Survey course examining solo vocal literature of the Romantic period and 20th century. (2 0,2 0)
5451. Piano Pedagogy. Prerequisite: six semester hours of piano or consent of instructor. Survey of various teaching materials and methods. Development of technique, style and musicianship. Topics: teaching children and adult beginners; teaching advanced students. May be repeated for credit as topic varies. (2 0,2 0)
5452. Piano Literature. Prerequisite: 248 or consent of instructor. Survey of music written for piano from its beginning to the present with consideration for early keyboard music and instruments preceding the piano. May be repeated as topic varies. (2 0,2 0)
5462. Techniques for the Singing Actor. Systematic approach to skills development for the singing actor. Study and preparation of character, style and movement using arias and scenes from the musical stage. (2 0 0)

5503. Graduate Recital. Presentation of a recital representing culmination of student's graduate study in music. Enrollment limited to the semester in which the recital is scheduled which should coincide with final enrollment in applied music. (2 0 0)
5505. Introduction to Graduate Study. Inquiry into the aims, scope and methods of music research. General areas appropriate to graduate research in music and some specific problems encountered in each. Technique of locating source materials. Collection, tabulation, analysis and interpretations of data. (2 2 0)
5512. Advanced Music History. Prerequisite: 347 and 349 or consent of instructor. Stylistic analysis of representative works and consideration of historical trends. One topic studied each semester of offering: (1) Renaissance, (2) Baroque Era, (3) Classical Era, (4) Romantic Era, (5) 20th century, (6) Middle Ages, (7) opera, (8) music in America, (9) music of non-Western cultures. May be repeated for credit when topics vary. (3 3 0)
5515. Seminar in Instrumental Music. Advanced rehearsal techniques for band and/or orchestra: instrumental routines and pedagogy; contemporary solutions to rehearsal problems; organization, administration and classroom management. May be repeated for credit when topics vary. (2 2 0)
5516. Seminar in Choral Music. Advanced rehearsal techniques for choir: pedagogy and voice building; contemporary solutions to rehearsal problems; administration, organization and classroom management. May be repeated for credit when topics vary. (2 2 0)
5521. Wind Instrument Literature. Analysis and evaluation for educational use of published materials for wind instrument solo, ensemble and band. (2 2 0)
5523. Score Study and Preparation. Score analysis, transposition, ear training and rehearsal procedures. (2 2 0)
5524. Advanced Instrumental Conducting. Prerequisite: 307 or consent of instructor. Practical training for students who have had considerable study and experience. Score reading, interpretation and baton technique. (2 2 0)
5541. Research Seminar in Music. Prerequisite: 5505. Definition and systematic research of a problem in music. Student may, with approval of instructor, choose a problem in the student's special field of interest. (2 0 0)
5571. Advanced Choral Literature and Techniques. Prerequisite: 309 or consent of instructor. Stylistic performance and interpretation of choral literature of six major historical periods: Antiquity to 1450, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic Era, 20th-century music. A combination of two periods studied each semester of offering. May be repeated twice for credit when topics vary. (2 0 0)
5575. Band Directors Workshop. Offered only during WTAMU Band Camp. Instrument clinics, performance in directors band and band topics presented by band camp faculty. May be repeated twice for credit. (2 2 0)
5576. Choral Directors Workshop. Offered concurrently with WTAMU high school and junior high school choir camps. Choral and vocal clinics offered by WTAMU voice and camp faculty. May be repeated twice for credit. (2 0 0)
5581. Advanced Music Theory. Prerequisite: 248. One topic will be studied during each semester of offering: 20th century styles and idioms, basic theory pedagogy, contemporary thought in music theory, advanced instrumental arranging. May be repeated for credit when topics vary. (2 2 0)
