Prior to joining West Texas A&M University, Garcia served as associate vice chancellor for enrollment services at the University of Washington Tacoma (2000 – 2007) where he directed the university’s enrollment management initiatives and assisted with publications, marketing and campus relations. During his tenure, enrollment increased from 1,600 in 2000 to 2,300 and with enrollment targets consistently met or exceeded. While in Washington State, Garcia was a part-time English composition instructor at Pierce College and enjoyed working with first-year students fundamentals to improve writing skills and appreciate the value of a well-crafted essay. His career began in 1993 at the University of Arizona as a program coordinator in the institution’s Center for Transfer Students, a unit with an emphasis in peer advising and faculty mentoring of underrepresented students. In 1996 he joined the University of Houston-Clear Lake as the assistant director of enrollment services, eventually serving as the interim director before joining the University of Washington Tacoma. Garcia is a native of Tucson, Ariz. He is married to Melanie Garcia, a graduate of Amarillo High School, and has two daughters and a son. His personal interests include collecting early editions of American Renaissance literature and reviewing critical analyses of those works. Associations and Education Garcia is an active participant in organizations such as the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE) and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO); in the latter he has served as the chair of the Latino/Latina Caucus and on the board of directors as the Association's vice president for access and equity. He is a regular presenter at national and regional conferences on the subjects of marketing, data management, and recruitment, particularly of underrepresented student populations. Dan D.
